Would you trade your Evo for a Z06?

Guys, I have a chance to sell my Evo quite easily for a decent price in return for an '02 Z06 (obviously I have to kick in some cash, but it's pretty smoking deal). I have always had low displacement turbo cars and I think that it would be fun to do the big V8 thing for a while. I have driven a Z06, although I wasn't allowed to fully get on the car, it had SOO much low end....AMAZING power from 1k to 6.5k rpms. The brakes were very nice. The only thing that was so-so was the tupperware interior and the seats that feel like you are in a lazyboy compared to the Evo's recaros.

What would you do?

um no.

Evolboost Oct 29, 2004 02:35 PM

As of right now no. I like the practicality of the Evo - 4 door, AWD, big wing :p . Don't get me wrong, I think the Z06 is a sweet car. I wouldn't mind getting one as a second or third car.

Hell yeah I would trade my EVO for that car in a heartbeat. Those cars are badass.A guy has a SC'd one here and he rapes the living sh#t out of everybody around here.Trade it!!That car is sweet!!!

Yeah, I am not sure what I want to do. The Z06's are absolute monsters in every area of performance and I'm single and in a good position to own a 2 seater. That said, I really do love my Evo and it's performance is definitely up there as well. Such a touch decision....

I have the exact car you're looking at (except it's an '03). What do you want to know about it?

EvolvedDragon Oct 29, 2004 02:40 PM

After flogging Zo-6s in various autocross events and getting some track as well as road time with the cars , I can tell you emphatically that I would not do it. But if you want to give that American Detroit Fiber Glass thing a shot go for it. It's what you like ultimatley at the end that counts. But as far as Im concerned I was able to hit corners faster and deeper in the Evo than the ZO-6 , Viper, 911 C4, S4, M3, and NSX!!!!! May I say the Evo offers incredible amounts of communication to the driver that the other cars save the Porsche can only dream about. Just my 2 cents. Oh yeah one more thing if you Mod and Tune your Evo correctly there really isn't many cars on the road that can touch you ...in any price range.

Heh, well really any insight you could provide would be great. Are there any common problematic areas? How is the tire wear under normal driving conditions? Do the LS2's have the piston slap problems that you read about on LS1's? Your insights and/or any comments you would like to make would be great.

Oh yeah, I would be daily driving this for a while. I'm not worried about that part at all, however, as the Z06 felt like it had a more forgiving ride than the Evo's.

Evolved, I am well aware of the potential of the Evo. I have 3 mods and my car runs very, very well on pump fuel. I actually went for my first ride in a Z06 after pulling the guy's buddy in his stock 6-speed '03 'Vette from a 40 kick up to 100 :) It's a very tough decision.

I think it all comes down to car lust. If I had to ask on this board whether I'd make the trade, then I know for sure my lust-level was low enough to just keep my money in the bank until something came along that made it uncontrollable.

A418t81 Oct 29, 2004 02:47 PM

Heh, very true. My "lust level" is right there at the verge. I really just wanted to see what other Evo owners thought of the Z06 and their opinions on it.

The Porsche definitely has the Evo on feel and handling. I would love it if I could get my Evo to where my 993 C4 was. My Evo is much faster in a straight line though, especially up here at 5000 ft. I guess I will have to do a 993 TT at some point. {thumbup}

As far as a Z06 goes... They are an amazing car if you can get past the build quality. The main problem I have with them is the image. Maybe I will buy one when I am fifty and in the middle of my mid-life crisis. :crap:

if that's your thing do it. If it were up to me, I'd wait for the C6 Z06. Unless it's really old, I'm not too crazy about out dated American Iron.

nbpal4000 Oct 29, 2004 02:51 PM

if it was new c5 or c6 i would....take it..
do corvettes have good resale value?

steve_evo Oct 29, 2004 02:54 PM

Hey Dude,

I feel your dilemna, and I can analyze it like this.

Z06:
-a real 2 seater, low seating sports car
-incredible NA power curve, perfect for track (effortless power)
-you will get piston slap, all LS1s and LS6s had it (LS2 has corrected this)
-tranny is know to overheat due to exhaust running close to transaxle
-stock tires suck (change when you buy the car)
-brakes good, but will still fade (recommend stoptech)
-absolutely cheap interior, horrible seats (recommend OMP or Sparco)
-takes alot more skill to drive at the limit, rear end very light at high speed

Conclusion: The z06 is a track car, with above average reliability, and requires
greater skill at the limit

EVO
-fast four door sedan with usuable trunk and interior
-somewhat laggy power, but very usable and smooth
-car is extremely reliable if well taken care of
-very communicative car, easy to drive fast at the limit
-more upright seating, somewhat barren interior but very functional
-lacks a little character, but with some exhaust the car can invoke raw feelings :)

Conclusion: an everyday sports sedan that is enjoyable at the limit and has a multitude
of practicality, however doesn't really 'standout' in sound and appearance (better for the cops)

Fair enough. :) I've driven an '03 Evo on more than one occassion, and obviously I like it a lot. For general comparing and contrasting, I'd start out by saying the Z06 handles *way* better than an average Corvette coupe. Totally a different car. You can listen to all of the people tell you that there's not a huge difference, but I've owned both (coupe and Z06), and I wouldn't dream of ever owning a non-Z06 again. The handling on the Z06 is very good (with more lateral grip than the Evo....the tires on the Z06 are seriously incredible), but it feels much larger. The Evo communicates better with the driver because it drives smaller. The Vette *never* drives small in any circumstances (not even on a big track). However, the grunt of the LS6 is just unreal. Mine nearly hit 117mph in the 1/4 mile with only an air filter....without powershifting on a 75 degree day on pump gas, stock tires, and a 2.15 sixty foot. Think about that for a minute. It's *fast* from 4k-6.5k rpm. Most cars can't touch it's top end under $100k except a Viper. The Evo is way more user friendly though (trunk, back seat, more room, better communication, AWD, etc). The Evo is just more composed I guess. It's less hard to handle at the limits in my opinion.

As far as ride stiffness, it's a close call. The Z06 is NOT that much more compliant than either Evo I drove (both '03s). They're both really rough.

Let's be honest. Yes, they both handle well. I don't know what kind of enthusiast you are (ie. what you care most about), but if a big portion of it is straight line, and then handling comes second (but you want it to be good too), I'd go Z06. It's got a LOT of curb appeal, and it's classy too. The curves are awesome. You get a LOT of car for your $. BUT, like I said, it's geared a little more for straight line enthusiasts who value handling as well, but just secondly behind POWER (just my opinion); and although it will put up the numbers, it will never drive as small and communicatively as the Evo. If you value the driving experience and handling above straight line roar, I'd probably go with the Evo. It's more of a purist's car to me. I'd love to have both. I really want an Evo, but I'd thoroughly enjoyed my Z06 (so much so that I don't know if I really want to give it up). It's an awesome ride.

You can't really "lose" either way.

You either get a larger 405hp 117mph trap running beautiful red Z06 that can pull 1 g on the skidpad but drives rather large and brutish while doing so, or you get a polished poised Evo that slaloms and handles up there with the best in the world but isn't terribly fast in a straight line.

I'd say it's personal preference! :)
