Gas Saving Tips

I'm sure we're all starting to feel the strain of gas prices sky rocketing. In the past 4 days here in daytona gas has gone up almost 30 cents across the city. I've seen it as high as $3.00/gallon for 93 and as low as $2.75/gallon for 93. I have a 20 mile round trip drive to/from work and I've been getting around 200-225 miles out of my tank. Filling up for around $30 every week is going to start hurting alot more once gas hits $3.00 everywhere and I'm sure within the next week it will. So what are some of your gas conserving tips for the evo? I don't drive the car very hard, get on it only once in a while and just changed my oil this past weekend. Mods on the car are only hks intake/bov/boost controller set just a little at/above stock settings. Wondering what some of you guys do to conserve fuel.

Compjoc Aug 15, 2005 02:03 PM

Cams kill your gas milage, I went from about 225 miles per tank to 170 miles per tank. :crap: I just try to stay out of boost if im just running errands and what not.

Turn the boost down, thats a start

bigmike9726 Aug 15, 2005 02:04 PM

dont boost

With my cams and my dyno of 334AWHP I just got on my last tank of gas 26.3MPG. I drove the car very easy, not really getting into boost and it really helped my gas mileage. Even under the Florida Heat I still got decent gas mileage.

twinevo Aug 15, 2005 02:08 PM

dont boost (i.e. shift at 2500 rpm)

Greg K Aug 15, 2005 02:08 PM

air up the tires. makes a big difference.

I get as much or more than i use to. I just got 297 my last tank and i am at like 230 with 1/4 tank left. I do get on it but not every chance i get.

i have cams as well.

wingnut17 Aug 15, 2005 02:13 PM

do all that and take the bus

4PistonsOfFury Aug 15, 2005 02:14 PM

Just stay out of boost. I average around 280 miles per tank. I have seen a little over 300 miles on a single tank (almost all highway). Especially off of a stop, just be a little conservative with the fun pedal. When I say conservative, I mean I still accelerate faster than the average grocery getter off the line, but am not trying to set a land speed record every time the light turns green. On the highways I average around 70-90 mph. I do get on it, but not from a stop. I have no spoiler, I heard this helps a good bit too.

Cams kill your gas mileage if you get into boost, with a tune and no boosting it will improve your gas mileage. I think it was Ted B who said he got some 280s and tuned them and got like 38 somthing miles to the gallon?

You've obviously never taken public transportation in this town :) I'd ride my bicycle to/from work before I took the bus and that's in 100 degree heat!

go_evo_go Aug 15, 2005 02:18 PM

get a hybrid!

shivaswrath Aug 15, 2005 02:21 PM

stay off the accelerator!!! (and get a better tune!)

I've only gone through 1.5 tanks, but remember, if you drive it like a race car, expect to fill it up as often as a race car pits. . . .:)

38mpg!!!!! holey **** that is incredible I need that tune until the gas prices drop. Give me more information, please.

ride scooter, bike, etc etc... Ride with your friends/co-workers. Whenver I go to my dads house i scooter there. Only because he lives about 5 minutes away.

Use your skateboard. Skateboard everywhere you go. Skateboard fast. You get to work quickly. Leave EVO at home and skateboard. Me? I have a 40 mile trip to skateboard to work. I get to work and then it's time to skateboard home. I'm very thin now.

evo_il8 Aug 15, 2005 04:21 PM

tune or just stay out of boost

naucrx Aug 15, 2005 04:31 PM

The biggest gas saver is to stay off boost. I've been meaning to try this myself actually. ;)

evolucion Aug 15, 2005 04:32 PM

Just got myselft 1984 Toyota Corolla (ae86 hatchback) Price on gas on this baby is almost 20 cents cheaper, until the price of the gas drop looks like I won't be driving the evo much.

TRDHarrier Aug 15, 2005 04:39 PM

i got 28mpg with cams!

coffeeslug Aug 15, 2005 05:16 PM

I love when people say "don't boost". As if I can do that! Shift a little earlier in town, i.e. keep your revs down and run it on the tall side of the gearing rather than the short side (if that makes sense). Helps a bit in the city, where my mileage regularly sucks.

MaxR Aug 15, 2005 05:23 PM

Synthetic fluids in the transaxle, transfer case and rear differential. It helps more than you think. and don't come to a full stop at stop signs, just california stop 'em.

TEXSRT4 Aug 15, 2005 05:28 PM

i too improved mileage with my cams, though its a differnt car...dont use your ac! extra drag on the motor uses up more power meaning more gas is needed.

jesterEVO Aug 15, 2005 05:46 PM

pffft just lay off the gas pedal...thats the same with any high power car..if you have cams..tune and do the same..hehe

timdog4life Aug 15, 2005 05:52 PM

draft behind trucks, cuts down on the wind resistance and will help with gas. Down side is you need to follow a big truck.

xxRIOxx Aug 15, 2005 06:10 PM

The gas milage was one of my concerns when i bought my evo. However i try to stay out of boost as often as i can. I live like 5 mins driving distance from my job. So I will be driving my beater in the winter (evo will be garaged most of the time)

Beater= 92 Honda civic HB CX No a/c (sux in the summer) $15-16 for a full tank that last a long time.

Drive downhill... everywhere.

short shift at 2500-2800 rpm and skip shift 2nd to 4th in town from light to light or slow traffic, you need to ease 2nd gear to 3000 rpm before you shift to 4th but it works smoothly. this is the GM trick on all the f body cars to meet mileage requirements and avoid gas guzzler tax. seems that if you shift 2800-3000( stay off boost) your in a better torque range and less lug on the car with better mileage, if you shift to soon you will lug the car and hurt gas mileage. last scientific article on this topic seemed to suggest a car under about 30% load got the best fuel mileage. dont use the brakes as much as possible coast when you can up to the stop. your brakes are the main reason your gas mileage goes down. cams didnt help my mileage but i am still tuning. i not sure how anyone can say cams help mileage. the more air you use the more gas you will need to make power and hence worse gas mileage. analogy race cars with cams never get good mileage , your cheap toyota 4 banger with 90hp gets great mileage. sorry guys just physics, you will always be able to tune the car with stock cam for better mileage than high profile long duration performance cams.

Driving with no a/c here in daytona is a death wish. 95 degree weather + humidity and I'd be soaken wet with sweat by the time i get to work. A/C is a must there's no way around that.

only problem with that, is they're tuning.

everyone knows the evo is pig rich stock. So whether you tune with cams, or tune without them, you're helping the situation. in performance, and mileage.

How in the world did you get that good of gas milage????? The best i can ever really get is 22mpg

zmeli Aug 16, 2005 10:20 AM

Remove the rear Wing!

i11matticc Aug 16, 2005 10:33 AM

damn wheres all that oil we're stealing from iraq going? i might have to put a meter in my car and charge my friends when i give them rides now

thebluesky Aug 16, 2005 10:35 AM

Just take it easy. It's all in how you drive. I usually average 300+ miles per tank modded (my record is 342 before the gas light came on). My friend who has similair mod always complains about poor mileage since he bought it new and didn't believe me until he saw how conservatively I drive.

kdogg Aug 16, 2005 11:55 AM

Shift before 3K. Get a more free flowing exhaust.

evo racing Aug 16, 2005 04:49 PM

my car is misfiring right now...could that be hurting my gas mileage? it takes about 1/2 tank to get from LA to sandiego...is that normal?

Toddevo 8 Aug 16, 2005 04:51 PM

go get a diesel

Curt@MrLed Aug 16, 2005 04:55 PM

dont go above zero psi, or you could dump 5000 into the motor, stand-alone, intake and exhaust, and you will get 30 mpg like me.. not much of a car at top end, but tons of power in the low to mid-range..

ive yet to get over 200 to a tank. Im normally at 170-180 and thats with minimal mods I just like to drive fast.

tswift Aug 18, 2005 12:22 PM

air up tires and keep air filter clean. Don't drag race off the line either. Less throttle means less gas used.

savageevo Aug 18, 2005 08:12 PM

do what I did, buy a honda hatch and put a k20 in there. should get around 35-40mpg.{thumbup}

trinydex Aug 19, 2005 01:54 AM

the thing that saves the most gas is getting a tune... this car can see well over 24 miles to the gallon if you get a good tune, even with cams... aparently ted b has done it... search for his thread on improved gas mileage.

even if it did help with downforce at low speeds, which it does it will create more grip on the ground which you in turn have to overcome with hp so yes removing hte wing will get you gas mileage.

ride22 Aug 19, 2005 01:38 PM

I have heard that it will make about 20-25 miles difference per tank.

i would wave the flag at that all day long.

the spoiler, ( cars don't have wings, airplanes have wings.), just wouldn't get much air... it's not that it's blocking anything, it's already behind the bulk of the car, thats breaking the air.

just stay outta the boost, it's not science.

Mr. Stock Aug 19, 2005 04:11 PM

What about some of the claims made by ECU tuners that their "chipped" ECU's or piggybacks will actually improve mileage around town? Anyone actually experience this or was it just too tempting to mash the right pedal?

Theibault Aug 19, 2005 04:18 PM

Buy a motorcycle.

just because it's a 7 mile trip to work, doesn't mean you have to boost ALL 7 MILES...

;)

some of you must not get the idea of "warming the car up" before beating on it.

If you hit the 10psi boost cut, you're on it too soon :p

Regardless, i save the full boost conditions for the track, and the 6 mpg that it promotes :D

cars have better gas mileage in hot weather than cold weather, car runs richer in cold weather. It takes longer for engine to warm up in the cold.

This is true, my Altima gets about 3 mpg more with the my cold air intake converted to short ram. Haven't had an experience with really hot weather in that car yet.

Whats funny is since this original post, gas has gone up $1.00 or more per gal!

Holy old thread bump!

Amusing to see people frustrated with a full tank of gas costing $30.00!

J!n K@z@mA Feb 15, 2012 09:46 PM

I was able to control myself from boosting the car for about more than a week. I was shifting at 3000rpm and I got it to 310mpg. and that's with Las Vegas heat around october last year. the car has 310 WHP.
