What mods WON'T void the warranty?
 

I'm assuming intake pipes, and exhaust are ok. How about BOVs?

Ecm tuning / reprogramming?

How about the intake? (The intake mainfold itself, not a cold-air elbow) I'm assuming you can't touch that, nor install aftermarket cams without voiding the warranty. Correct?

Does anyone have any input? What mods do you have, while retaining the factory warranty?

Any mod can void a warranty. It's up to the dealer.

To void the warranty the dealer must prove, beyond any doubt, that the modification could cause damage to the engine, drivetrain, etc.

Run a search for warranty or void. There are hundreds of threads with far more detail than my quick reply.

modifying the driver, a driving course or racing school i have heard can do more than most mods to the car.

Actually, reading up on all of the clutch issues, it almost makes me wonder if the clutch was designed to be weak on purpose.... say, so people turn to aftermarket clutches.

Then if there were other unforseen problems with the EVO drivetrain, Mitsubishi could point to everyone with an aftermarket clutch and say, "Voided warranty", rather than lose tons of money on making repairs. (Unless you stick with weak factory clutches)

Sort of like a back door... Hmm. I wonder.

when i picked up my evo, i picked up a magazine (SCC i think) they had sitting on the table and was checking out some article on the evo... i mentioned it to my sales guy, and asked him about the warranty if i wanted to do any of these things to my car.. i can't even remember now what it was, except i think one of them was vishnu sub zero or maybe stage 0, sorry my memory sucks... anyways he says that 'vishnu is cleared with mitsubishi', and it won't void my warranty... he also mentioned a few others that were 'cleared', i remember he said HKS but i dont remember what else... anyways... is this total BS or anyone know if its legit? :) THANKS!

Nothing is suppostue void the warranty unless it causes the problem, but most dealers are gay...I'd suggest going and talking to your dealer, that's what I plan on doing.

I wonder if a dealership would be willing to, "OK" some mods in writing, therefore you wouldn't have worries about any warranty issues.

That would really help sell me on an Evo

Your sales person was bs'ing you because he thought it would help make the sale. The truth is that NO aftermarket parts are cleared for warranty coverage across the whole dealer network.

That being said, no parts will actually void your warranty either. Mitsu can only void warranty coverage for failures that were directly attributed to the installed aftermarket part.

So, putting on an aftermarket exhaust won't void your warranty. but if that aftermarket exhaust heats up the fuel tank enough to cause a fire, you are not covered for those repairs. Putting cam gear on your car won't void the warranty. But if those cam gears slip and cause internal engine damage, you will not be covered.

WRONG. The law doesn't say that the dealer must prove "beyond ANY doubt" that the mod could cause the damage.

When talking about legal causation, you always need to establish both 1) general causation and 2) specific causation.

What you are talking about (that the mod COULD cause the damage) is general causation , as opposed to specific causation (which means that the mod actually DID cause the damamge).

In both of these tests, but more specifically in regards to YOUR comment, the standard for general causation is always a "reasonable" standard, NOT beyond any doubt.

There should be some rule on here about not posting wrong information. False info could be costly to the many people , esp. newbies on here that rely on this info for help.
