Whine noise as rpm's increase
 

Recently i have noticed a whine noise associated as rpms increase i hear it most from2500k to 4k then exhaust noise takes over it is not tcase since it happens when car is in gear or i am sitting stationart with clutch in. I thought it was alternator but i replaced that and the seperntine belt and the noise remains car has 103k on it timing belt was done recently, i just can not figure it out.

Too funny because I have the exact same thing happening. It started about a week after my timing belt replacement. I've suspected a tensioner, however I haven't had a chance to really dig into it yet.

haha really? i had my timing belt donw at 90k since i had it done at 30 by dealership for a diff issue. but timing belt is fresh serpentine belt and alternator got done on saturday, just an irritating whiney noise no performance issues just embarassing and clearly something is not right

I had the exact same noise just a couple days ago. and the timing belt let go, bent a few valves. The tensioner was weak and the belt was slightly lose. Lesson learned from me. I will say that the kevlar belts also make a little more noise too.

oh wow, how would i know if tensioner is weak?, i can't remember what sort of seperntine belt it is, had a friends shop do the work, it is blue if that helps maybe gates?, timing belt is oem and pretty new

any other ideas what it could be?

Exactly the noise I have at the moment. Enough to make you "that guy" for all of the wrong reasons. My gut tells me it's a bearing on one of the pulleys. I just need to bring the car to the shop to get it hashed out. I would venture to say that the belt tension was too high when I had the timing and serpentine belts replaced. More than likely caused stress on a pulley which in turn caused the bearing to fail. I don't know that for certain though until it gets diagnosed.

i have the same problem that seemed to start after all my belts were replaced and after i used the ac washer trick to get ac working.

also note that on mine it is louder on hot days and when the ac is on.

Remove the serpentine belt and drive it around the block, be sure not to overheat iit, and see if the whine is gone. Mine makes the same noise but its gone with the serpentine belt off, kinda sounds like its coming from the power steering pump.

my friend who was a mitsu tech could not fogire it out but he did hear it but with it reved to about 3k he could not pinpoint it under the hood, and it does seem noiser on ot days or once car is warmed up. i might try the seperntine belt trick both the belt and alternator are brand new, seems a lot of people have this issue haha, 90zcrex, how od you like coloumbia my brother goes to school there gamecocks

Shouldn't be a need to drive around. If you have the serpentine belt disengaged, you can just start the car. The whine I have is there all the time so it's easy enough to check sitting in the driveway if you were to pull the serpentine.

I haven't mucked around with the belts on my evo in the past. How tough is it to just loosen the belt to check this out?

I would check over all the obvious. Definitely remove the serp belt and see if the noise is still there. The serpentine belt has a auto tensioner so there is no way to over tighten it. Start with the simple stuff and then work your way behind the timing cover. It could be many things, idler pulley, bearings in the alternator pulley, power steering pump, etc.
