NEW MEMBER NEW EVO 9 OWNER :)

Hey All :D

This has been a dream come true for me. I am so excited to join this forum and talk and communicate with other Evo owners.

First of all, MODs if this thread is in the wrong section please forgive me and you can move it to its appropriate location.

A little background history about me..

What can i say.. it is a dream come true. I have been wanting this car since i was 15 and fell in love with it even more after playing Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, watching F&F Tokyo drift.. I came across and checked out so many Evos that went past me and watched other richer and more financially stable people buy the evos before i even looked at them or got a chance to see them. There were some that i looked at that the ******* dealerships wouldnt let me sit in or see because they thought i was just a teenager wanting to mess **** up. My parents promised me they'd buy it for me after high school in 2008 and was led down. Then they switched and were like finish college and we will help you get that... so i finished college in 2014 and still no evo for me and was let down. Along the way through college, i was saving up money and working part time. My first car was 2003 acura tl type s. Fast and nice, but still no evo lol :D

I went through alot of evos as i was looking specifically for evo 9 mr edition. I wanted the 6 speed because of they highways here in chicago. Let me mention the important part here lol me wanting an evo and not knowing a clue on how to drive stick. I was always put down and made fun of by friends because they thought i was all "talk" and i would never buy one. So my last year of college i was like screw this im saving up and buy this thing for my own. Dont need my parents or anyone else. In 2014 i began looking really hard and i went and checked them out with my brother. Him too, not knowing how to drive stick properly lol. But he was a mechanic so he knew his **** but we just never experience driving manual as all of our friends drove auto. Saw some good evo 9 mrs some were clean but the dealerships wanted the world for them with low miles (around 30k after taxes). Some were tuned and modded and i was like no i want a bone stock or one close to it. I knew it would be hard and i was going to pay alot of $$ for it..but still i waited..

Then i faced another issue where the banks couldnt approve me on any loans and my dad is retired so i couldnt use him as a cosign. If i went through any third party or smaller banks, i was getting crazy interest rate and very high monthly payment. I was thinking **** this car maybe out of my reach and i should go with the X but i just couldnt stand the back of it compared to the 9. My heart was set on the 9. In summer 2015 i began looking. I used this forum alot throughout my journey such as what to look for when looking at used evo 9, the matching vins, the tires (if cheap ones, most likely it has been beat on), the mods, and everything. I began to be very picky. I also read on here somewhere where people bought evos with no stick experience and managed to be okay because it is an easy car to learn on. I continued checking in summer 2015 and this time i had the money and trade and everything. But no luck finding 9 MR close to stock as possible and low mileage. I was looking for anything under 50K preferably one owner and max i was paying would've been 26k. One day after gym i saw on cars.com a newly listen black mr with 27k miles for 27k but this time i was like finally omg! BUt one problem it was in Minnesota and i am in Chicago. Something inside me told me to call the dealership to see if it was still there. I called the guy was really nice and said we just got it in. It is bone stock. One owner and the guy just collected cars. He sent me pics and told me they were putting new tires and brakes and told me if im interested, quickly apply for a loan so he can process things. I was still thinking yeah but it is in MN.. So i did the loan and quickly got approved at 5% apr and i was like whatever i can live with that and $300 monthly payments. I went with my guts and drove to MN with my dad and brother and wow was i in love lol. The guy was right and wasnt lying about anything. The car was clean inside and out except for some rock chips and the front grill being white from the snow. I can always paint that. The engine was fine. Stock everything. Even the radio lol. The guy was 60 years old and right then i was like im sold im signing the papers.

I was so happy even though i pain close to 28k for this but it was everything that i wanted and all the features. I even got blessed with the SE package that has the red stitching which i love. The journey back home so "fun" a couple of nice stalling and holding up traffic and panicking as **** as i just invested so much money into a car i didnt know how to drive lol. SO sad that the salesman test drove it for us lol but we didnt notice any mechanical and checked the car underneath. I felt safe as i bought this from a Mitsubishi dealership that went the extra way and inspected 360 for everything. So it felt like i was buying a pre-certified mitsu. The dealer changed the fluids, timing belt, tires and brakes and did all the recalls and gave me all paperwork. The guy was really nice and helpful.

I know this is long but im just excited and sharing my journey.

So here is my beautiful evo 9 mr se

Bone Stock
OEM Everything (original clutch still, haven't broke it...yet lol)

MODS:
I dont know where to start as i need to get some cash first but i am starting with tints first and i already installed aftermarket radio

Next MODS:

Exhaust, tune, intake and wanting to push 360HP but just hoping im okay with the 6 speed as i heard they brake easily when you begin to mod the car.

So that is my story:)

Hope you guys get a chance to read this and looking forward to chatting with you guys soon. Im a proud evo owner now and the car is amazing and learning stick on this was a piece a cake. It toke me 3 weeks and i was out in traffic and everything {thumbup}{thumbup}{thumbup}

Welcome and many congrats with your journey! That is one 'heck of an introduction! Only thing missing are PHOTOS! I'm glad things worked out for you and that you got what you really wanted instead of settling! I also have a IX-MR, that I bought new, and (still) with a 6-speed! I will never switch to a 5-speed. I do track days, car shows, and all that. She was daily driven for most of the time. My car currently has 108K miles, and I still love every minute of it! It is very modded, and with those amount of miles, she still treats me great!

I sincerely wish you the best, ad I hope you will take care of that car, because if you do, she'll take care of you and reward you with many smiles for many years! You need anything, just ask! Congratulations!

Thank you so much and i appreciate the comment. It has been a long journey but so rewarding at the end. I guess what they say is right, patience is a virtue. I'm glad to hear another 9 MR owner and used to read posts about people here hating on the MR because of the badges minor features but i love the 6 speed, rims, badges, alumium roof and hood, and just overall look. Like you, i am not planning on switching the trans and just doing minor mods for now. I have always taken care of my cars. Even the 03 Acura and used nothing but premium gas and premium oil in it. Just did my first oil change in this evo and costed me as much as the Acura did. I can deal with 200-215 miles to the tank because it has a small fuel tank but still avg 18mpg. I posted one picture and will upload more. Im at work so i cant now lol. But i am keeping this for a long time and is def a daily driver for now. But 108 is still low for first original owner. I'll post more pictures this weekend. {thumbup}

Thanks. She is in great hands no worries. I don't even bother doing crazy **** like beating on it and launching it as im still fairly new to the car and the manual transmission world. Best compliments so far have came from a guy at my gym that drives a 14' STI and always parks next to me lol and an asian dude that pulled up in a GTR! I was shocked at that one lol. He told me "nice car" before i even told him nice R35. And btw, some people that claim to "know" evos continue to ask what year is my car and when i tell them they say is that evo 9 or 8? Like common really? lol:confused::confused::lol::lol:

Thank you bro and appreciate the love. Wow, you got a steal on yours! Was it modded or anything? One onwer? The rush was amazing, when we got on the ramp, I sounded just like paul walker when he said in 2 fast 2 furious, "let's see what this thing can do" lol boom hit 80mph and my poor dad was almost 10 car lengths behind lol. Amazing drive home. Amazing car!

LOL. Thanks man. I re-read it and I guess i sound like a little kid during Christmas season lol. I apologize as i saw grammar errors and my spelling was a little off, but hey i was just so excited typing my story and posting here lol. Yes those people who doubted me began to hate on me as i proved them wrong. I can't lie and say God did not help me because he did lol. He knew how much i prayed and even one point, cried about it. Like you said, for some people, it is our dream car. Don't care for no ferrari or lambos lol. I guess you can say the next dream car would be the R35 but that's way down my life right now lol. I am planning on keeping this for a long long time. I know the value will never go down. But I gotta admit, the New EvoX Final Edition is beautiful! But whoever buys that needs to swap those seats with JDM Red Stitched Recaros! lol

drive home. Amazing car!

Yea the car was one owner and had about 8 services done on it for oil changes and 2 recalls , he did Greddy Ti full exhaust with aftermarket o2 and a Wally 255 pump , also a Muse short route UIC and ETS intercooler and a hallman MBC , nothing wrong with the car clean car fax just some very small minor hail damage that's hardly noticeable . I'm dying up here in Pa because I can't wait to get it back out again . It's amazing how a 3rd gear pull will bring you to 80 in no time these cars are amazing , took me about 10 years to finally get one at 28 years old , enjoy it , love it , respect it

Jonno99 Mar 4, 2016 01:44 PM

You are like the Rocky of Evo's lol congrats, you payed alot but you got a car that will last along time now. Don't paint the stone chips yourself unless you know what you are doing, I've seen some terrible patch up jobs on stone chips, I've got 3m vinyl wrap on my front that's years old when I bought it, so I am to scared to get it removed lol also ask questions and do lots of reading before you spend lots on modding, there's lots of mod regrets out there, learn about ecuflash if you like to DIY too, good luck bro

So just tasteful mods not bad! {thumbup} Yeah i hear you and although my current route to work sucks because chicago has been so horrible and lazy with fixing the roads as it's already making me think about getting 3-4g car soon so i can just use that for work. The car pulls up quick. And i know what you mean, im 26 and finally got it. Like the other poster said, we made it lol. I am going to baby forsure.

LOL that is so funny as some people say i talk like Rocky at times lol. I did pay alot but i just felt like enough is enough and just knew it was time and the right one for me. I am not planning to do any mods right now because i'm still looking into building my future right now and seeing what to do with my finance degree lol. I will not be doing any paint myself. The car will be going into detailing as soon as the snow is done here. Those were just my future mods wishlist lol. I will read alot on them before i do anything crazy. That is a smart idea of vinyl wrapping the hood to avoid those rock chips lol. The car def needs detail inside as i think the old man had a dog cuz i noticed scratches that can't be human fingers lol and some dog hair on the doors.

Congrats on a great find!! As noted by my car as well, Minnesota does have a few clean Evos left!

My story is similar to yours, as I knew what I wanted, bid my time and waited. It took almost 3 years to find my wicked white IX. I never thought I'd find one in this state, but I certainly did! It had 31k miles on it, was modded tastefully, taken care of… so I bought it and couldn't be happier with it!

The big difference however, is prior to picking up my Evo I picked up a 99 Honda Civic Si so that I could learn to drive a manual, as I too had never learned how to. After a few years of driving my Civic on and off, I felt I was ready for the Evo. I still have that Civic as it's currently at 8,500 miles.

I've had my Evo for a little over 3years now and have slightly modded it a bit more, and I've done my own detailing on the car to make it what it is today.

Wow similar story to mine. And we both found ours in the same state lol. Looking back at it now, i mean i could've settled for some that had tasteful mods, but i just wanted one close to stock as possible to make it MY OWN project with MY tastes you know? Consider yourself lucky because two great evo 9s that passed me up and were sold quickly were GG MR SE, but had a theft and then recovered title. And a WW 9 MR which i hear is really rare. I really wanted the white one because it looks great with tints and nice set of great quality HIDs. But you got a good clean one with low miles. Here in Chicago, we rarely see clean evos. They are all modded and it is like one in a blue moon we see one every now and then. So i opened up my options and started looking over 500 miles range lol and found that one in Minnesota. Before i called, there were 5 people looking at it and this poor guy from Seattle was paying to ship it there but for MY LUCK, the guy sold it to me because he said Chicago is only 5.5 hours away and I'd rather sell it to you because you did all the paper work, loan application, and gave him$1000.00 security deposit. Everything fell into it's place it was like true love as this car continued to mess with my head and you hear that stupid cliche if it is true love let it go, if it comes back then it's yours lmaooooo well, the Evo continued coming back to me and kept dreaming about it. LOL. But thanks to everyone who took the time to read this and give me the thumbs up. Great place and great people on here for sure. If you dont mind me asking, why tools do you need to do your own detailing? And would you recommend a newbie to do it themselves?

I actually passed on a GG IX SE as well during my search… miles were actually too high for my liking at 50k and it was too heavily modded. It's actually an interesting story about my pickup as well… I test drove my Evo in Brooklyn Park, MN. (a suburb of the Twin Cities) on my way to the Ford Nationals in Carlisle, PA. and on the way I stopped at Oak Lawn Mazda in Chicago to look at a handful of Evos they had in stock. The cars were all in AWFUL condition, and had all been obviously beaten on. They had maybe 5-6 of them, and I wouldn't have touched any of them… but it wouldn't have mattered, as I had put a 500 dollar deposit on the IX I found in Brooklyn Park. I picked the car up 5 days later when I returned from the Ford Nationals car show.

If you're serious about detailing… watch some videos on YouTube from Chemical Guys. They have a TON of "how to" videos on literally everything. I say get yourself a good dual action polisher with some foam cutting pads. With a good DA and foam pads it's next to impossible to harm your paint, and the results will SHOCK you the first time you try it. There are also some great detailing forums as well, like AutoGeek… they have loads of help as well!

Good luck!!!

Mcpunk: I can understand and def see where you are coming from to find clean evo 9s with just a little tasteful mods. Oak Lawn Mazda, I dont even want to get started on them lol. Such a horrible experience and all their evos were beat like you said and modded in ways i just stayed away. I turned some on and the evo was just choking and one that was misfiring. The salesman was like oh yeah, it's normal these cars havent been on for awhile. I was like yeah right sure lol. The other one he said yeah that is the ecu recall that mistu called on these and i was like dude stop..lol some bs stories. I have checked those guides and youtube videos before on detailing! I just want to take care of the rock chips first and then get the 3M carbon fiber wrap that was suggested here to prevent future chips. I was just paranoid about the DA polisher and swirl mark remover was going to damage it. Since it was an old man that owned this, he had the wing off before they sold it to me and luckily for me he gave it to the dealership cuz i love that wing and will never take it off lol. So with the wing off, it looks like he never hand washed it since i know MN can be just as cold if not colder than chi. So i am assuming he took it to those machine washes that eff up your paint lol. So i need to remove the swirls cuz my acura had better paint job cuz i always hand washed it either myself or at the hand wash places.

Chemixd: Thanks bro. I was ready to settle for the X but luckily for me, this popped up lol {thumbup}{thumbup}

Jonno99 Mar 5, 2016 11:08 PM

3m Clear vinyl bro, it comes in templates for each panel, you chose the panels. It does yellow after a few years but on black you can't notice it at all. I wouldn't do it on white. You also don't want places that trim it with razor knives, as they can cut the paint and you won't find it till years later. So ask question before you give it to someone to do

Blackgloves89 Mar 7, 2016 07:11 AM

Thanks Jonno99, i will def keep that in mind. I am not looking to do anything until i start getting some extra cash lol. So as of right now, i will be driving it bone stock and it still drives nice and sounds great stock. Sorry guys i couldn't post any pictures, i never had the time to wash it and i dont want to upload the pictures of the evo looking dirty lol

B Roharik Mar 7, 2016 10:13 AM

I actually have had a very similar story. I saved for a bout a year and a half and took about 2 and a half years to find the right one because I knew the evo I wanted wasn't going to be cheap or easy to find. I wanted one with no more then 50k miles. we went through 3 evos before I finally found my unicorn. last year I managed to get a red 05 MR which was the first year of the MR in the states and only one thousand were made. it had only 11k miles and completely bone stock. I have a daily and living in Ohio I would never want it to ever see snow being as rare as it is plus that way it stays mint and doesn't rack up the miles just from daily commute to work. it'll be coming out of storage in the next month or so. I also had very little manual experience but I got the hang of it pretty quick.

It is nice to know that i was not the only one struggling to get this car while working part time, saving, finishing school, and looking for a clean close to stock evo 9 mr lol. You got yourself a mint very very low mileage one! I wish i could have the extra cash to get another car and use this evo in non rain/snow conditions. I would love to keep it low mileage as i am looking to keep this for awhile and make it my own project. But the evo 8 MR's are rare in general but the red ones, i rarely found. Even the evo 9 Mrs. That red is really really nice. But one thing i heard about the evo 8 mrs vs evo 9 mrs, again idk how true this is, but the 9 mrs, mitsu made the turbo bigger? or the turbo cooler is better on the 9 mr than 8 mr? Idk how true that is?

Wow!!

That is one hell of a find!! Sadly we don't have many clean IXs down south and it took me a good minute to find mine for a reasonable price and close to stock. Enjoy!

Can't wait to see the progress!

Congrats. I have a black mr se as well. Learned to drive manual on it too. Take good care of it.

Evotech: Thanks bro. I'm just worried about the car not being stolen or some low life will try to ruin my dream as i am waiting to get an alarm system on it. Yeah i understand what you mean about finding one clean and close to stuck. These cars prices will continue to go up and my parents never understood me that the money i paid for it now, was the same i would've paid 8 years ago when i was shopping for one. Funny, how the value never went down on these? If it is for sale at the dealerships, unfortunately we have to pay for what they want or else some other wealthier guy will grab it from us. lol

Sam: Thanks bro and we got twin evos! lol I will baby this and take very well care of it as i plan on owning it for awhile. Driving manual on this was so easy to learn. Love it. Love the manual world now lol

Yeah that's exactly I feel! That's why you need a garage to keep that baby in lol.

Just remember to enjoy her and not be in a constant state of paranoia. Also then go crazy and call attention to yourself too much, that's where I see that the "haters" will start targeting

Sil'vr-Boi6 Mar 9, 2016 02:24 PM

congratulation and welcome. Buy you a high quality alarm system...as you already know Chicago is a hot bed for evo theft probably highest in all united states.

Evotech: LOL. True that. The car already generates so much damn attention. I believe more than X. I see evo x drivers looking at me and smiling or thumbs up signs lol.

Sil'vr: Thanks and will do bro soon. I know the stealing rate for these cars are high here in Chicago. Any great alarm systems preferably with gps tracking you or others recommend? I'd love to locate the smart ass that will try to jack my ride lol

Yeah, you can try. And one day you find yourself thinking, "maybe I can enhance the ride a little"

And then it's a slipperly slope down to a 400 whp, dark tints, black powder coated BBS wheels and the suspension upgraded with coilovers and rear sway bar.

And then you realize you have a black on black on black beast roaming the streets of Chicago. It's a nice feeling :)

Have fun with the Evo OP

Cleon: That is my plan for now as i need money to work on this car. Which is why i am calling it a project.

Wacob: That is one sexy black evo in Chicago lol. You are right, the temptation is always there lol. Max i want to go is 400HP but im not sure about lowering the ride cuz chicago streets are horrible. Now imagine, i get tints on my evo and we meet up, put our rides together and we'd make one hell of a wallpaper. It will be like having two dark nights lmao {thumbup}. But thank you bro. How you get away with dark tints here in Chi? lol

Thanks for the compliment.

Dark tints are usually not a problem in Chicago. Cops are too busy trying to bust up gangs to really care about non-moving violations. Its the dark tints in the suburbs that I get issues with occasionally.

One cop in Mt Prospect gave me a warning and another in Arlington Heights gave me a $20 ticket after he pulled me over for them.

In fact, speeding in general isn't a problem in the city, just keep your Waze on and don't be a complete idiot (and yes, watch for the potholes). Speeding in the suburbs is a whole different story, esp if you have a louder exhaust.

Also, do you have your front license plate? I know a front license plate looks bad on the evo but you WILL get a front license plate ticket from the meter maids if you park on Chicago streets. After they check to see if you paid the meter, they will also check to see if you have a front license plate.

And lastly, this is obvious but don't park overnight outside in Chicago. You are asking for trouble. I did that and got my rims stolen. I recovered them (long story) but I was one of the very lucky few.

Drive safe...Boost hard ;)

Congrats, definitely a good feeling.
There's nothing out there quite like the Evo.

dtenev2 Mar 14, 2016 10:08 AM

If you really want to baby it, do your Evo a favor and never drive it in Chicago from Dec 1st, to Mar 1st. Also don't ever launch it, and always shift gears smooth and slowly. This way your 6 speed trany will last. These are my tips.
You picked up a really nice car.

Wacob: Damn man consider yourself lucky, cuz that ticket is very expensive lol. I live in the burbs so i do have to worry about speeding and tints level lol. And i do have a front plate, because i am tired of having cops having a probable cause to pull you over. While other domestic cars, they let them go for no front plates. Since we drive imports, it is a problem. And i will never park my car in chicago or downtown. Some actually tried stealing my acura so i will never drive that car there.

Psi: Thank you and will do lol {thumbup}

Cts4g63: Hell yeah it is an amazing feeling. This evo is probably going to be the best car i have ever driven in my life. Unless if i get a r35, but still...lol..an evo is an evo and im glad i own a piece of the legend :)

So far i have been babying it and it only faced some snow here in chicago for its first winter lol. I rarely ever drive this car to the city and i always shift smoothly and slowly. But i gottta say, getting into second gear is not as smooth sometimes but i hear that is common from all evos. I also experience some clutch shuddering or juddering in the mornings, usually when the car is cold and ready to roll. But goes away after 1-2mins of driving. I also hear that is normal as well and that an excedy stage 1 HD twin clutch will reduce it? idk, it is what i have heard. I am planning on keeping it for a while and maintaining it as much as possible. I will be looking into getting 2-3g car for the winter times so that way the evo never sees snow again :D

Jgreenwald1911 Mar 23, 2016 11:57 PM

good read, congrats
