My evo it's a Frankenstein

Hello everyone, in new here on this forum, my name is Luca and im from Italy so sorry for my english.2years ago i had the brilliant idea of import my actual Evo "9" from a foregin country, the car seems good, checked by a Mitzu mechanic and everything seem fine... a here start my sci-fi story...i started disassembly, clean everything and i discovered a lot of bizzarre things, It has-Evo 6 short block( discovered during the timing belt replacement) - Evo 9 head, and this is ok - Evo X 1050cc injectors ID- modified fuel rail with fuel pressure sensor- double map, i think tephraAfter all i decided to run a Dyno
car in map 2 with boost at 20psi Is 385hp and 39kg of torque
The tuner had no idea how can this be possibileI ordered, and im waiting for the 1.3u cable, i wanna study more this carSomeone ever had experiences like this in the evo world? What other mods it's possible are installed on this car to make such power with no particolar sense?
Turbo, pistons and rods are stock,
Btw in planning to change the block. Thanks in advance

Hi Luca @Luca Bernardi

We need to know the following:
  • Are sure the turbo is stock?
  • What fuel are you running?
  • Whats the boost pressure?
  • What dyno type measured the output? (Dyno Jet, Mustang, or other)
Cheers, Joe

Thanks for the reply

So, i think it's a mustang Dyno, here in Italy we divided dynos in just 2 categories, rollers and the One you call dyno jet...i give you a pic of the dyno used, turbo i think it's stock because of the code (Td05) but i don't know if it is stock turbo housing and modified internals, i give you a pic also of this one...fuel it's a 100 Ron, pretty common here but not the cheap one...turbo pressure it's 1.38 bar, 20psi

Hi Luca

So yes, i would say that 385 wheel HP number (whether it was DynoJet & especially if the Dyno is Mustang based) does seem high based on:
  • 20 psi
  • 100 RON (91 octane)
  • stock turbo
We can get up to 400 wheel HP (DynoJet) on a stock turbo here in the US but we need the following:
  • 85% ethanol
  • Approx 27 psi turbo pressure
  • stock turbo

It is possible that i have stronger camshaft installed? Everything seems stock from the outside, stock air intake with BMC filter, but the the strange thing Is 1050 injectors, ACT clutch for over 500hp, a lot of sensors connected everywere and in the ECU, and such power, tuner have no idea why without open the block, in his opinioni, the car in this state should be able to do max 310hp, we tried the Dyno with a friend car and Is 450hp like other dyno he tested, so the dyno it's ok...

Even with a non OE cam, i dont think the wheel HP numbers would be that high based on what you have noted. Whoever installed the larger injectors was certainly intending on a tune but 385 whp still seems too high

In Europe the most common is 100ron and 95 ron. Similar to 93 octane and 91 octane. Also HP is commonly used instead of WHP. And most probably the car is 380HP which is very common for his setup. Around 310whp

Nope, block code Is 4g63, but from an Evo 6, Is slightly different, for example the water pump housing and alternator support

Yes, HP, a stock Evo 9 is 280 Hp, measured on the same Dyno as mine was tested, stock turbo pressure is 1.4 bar with peak at 1.6...mine Is the same turbo pressure, stock turbo...the other strange mods are the 1050cc, oversized in my opinion, and other things are "stock", Just a cheap IC and complete new exaust system, and the car Is 100HP more than a stock one, for the tuner will be ok, but only increasing the turbo pressure, and mine is stock, and he can't understand why without disassembly the engine...pistons and rods are both stock as you can see in a picture, pistons i've checked the code with an endoscope....the other strange thing Is the multi map...now i'm waiting for the evoscan cable just for look what kind of tune was done...

Stock evo should be around 0.8-1.0 bar and at least 300Hp. turbo-back exhaust and a safe tune on an evo 9 should take you easily at 400hp and 50-53kg of torque (1.5-1.6bar) and 370hp and 50-53kg of torque on an evo 8 (1.5-1.6bar). 100 ron always. So your evo is definitely not a Frankenstein. And if your tuner believes so, he knows nothing about evos.

I call It Frankenstein Just because it's an Evo 9 with evo 6 short block and a mivec head and evo 10 injectors and adapted fuel rail... but if this pretty much a normal value for this setup and the HP so i won't investigate more, btw, in planning to fix all this mess in the future because everything in the engine bay it's adapted and normal spare parts won't fit.... thanks alot for your explenation
