Anyone Replaced an Axle seal yet on their EVO?

Just wondering if it's a biatch or not? I haven't broken anything down just yet. I heard the seal is like $8 bucks or something and it's sup. to be pretty simple according to the mitsu dealer. Let me know if you have done this yet and anything I should watch out for. Thanks in advance......

The seal is cheap but the labor kind of sucks. It really dirty/greasy. How did you tear a boot on your axle already?

i didnt tear a boot, the seal on the transmission case (oil seal) is leaking. The seal is 3$ something...and i do the stuff myself so labor will be nothing. I asked the dealership just to get a rough idea on price of their install and it was around 120$.

From looking at the manual, it looks like you can just pry the old one off and press a new one in after you take off the axle. You do have to lube the seal up. You can probably use a socket to press it on.

That "special tool" breaks down to a socket that is the same size as the outer diameter of the seal... in order to "tap it in" evenly.

The axle is a pain to get out, but that's about it.

Alright I am having a hard time getting that axle seal back in on the passenger side. On the passenger side there is a shaft sticking out of the transfer case so I can use a standard bearing/ install tool. I see the MD998800 oil seal installer tool but figured I don't need that. I have big sockets that I try to match up to the seal but nothing that goes over the outer diameter of the seal, its closer to the inner diameter. I try to get the seal started evenly but laying on the ground under the car I am not having any luck. Does anyone have any pointers or tips? I tried putting an extension on the socket to tap it with a hammer but it is an awkward one man job. Every time I start tapping it gets cocked.

Please give me some pointers. What size socket are people using, how have they done it in the past?

here is whats up... make sure you get the right side seal for which ever side you are doing as they are different. its pretty easy to do as you just have to take one bolt out of the knuckle so it drops down then you can bang the axle out. be careful not to damage the new seal when putting it in. TAKE A GOOD LOOK at the old seal and make a mental note of how far its set it as you dont want to put the new seal in to far or you will get a leak. Thats if your current seal is the original. if its not, just make sure you dont put the new seal in to far.

How did you drive the seal in? That is what I'm having problems with. I have a hard time getting it in straight when working under the car.
