wash wheels, lightly sand with 400 grit, rewash and dry, then use duplicolor wheel primer, then duplicolor wheel coating (paint), then duplicolor wheel clear coat

Sounds easy enough. How many coats of each, primer, paint and clear coat?

the trick is to use a deck of cards stuck between the bead of the rim and tire then newspaper elseware.

my wheels are gun metal

as for coats i put about 2 or 3 coats of primer or kept rotating wheels till the 2 cans were gone. then about 3 coats of paint or till i was happy with the finish. 1 coat of clear. if you want the color to stay the same after its paint only you have to spray the clear very lightly. the more clear the more the color will change. my wheels turned out much darker after i put the clear on.

I did mine about a year ago. Went with flat black. Here is the process I came up with.

1. Deep clean wheels use household dishwashing soap. Remove all particles. The cleaner the better.

2. Sand wheels with 1000 grit sand paper. Make sure you get all the cracks. Take your time, the better you sand the better the results.

3. Re-wash wheel.

4. Dry wheels and then use a tach cloth to remove all particles.

5. Prep your wheels. I used simple masking tape to mask off the tires. Make sure you get it all the way around the exposed part of the tire and down into the crack where the wheel meets the tire.

6. Spray primer coat.

7. Spray first coat of paint. I used high heat flat black spray paint. Yes, the same stuff you use for your BBQ.

8. Let dry for 30 min or what ever is recommended between coats on your can.

9. Spray second coat of paint.

I did not clear coat the rims. I was looking for a true flat black look with no gloss. If you want to spray clear you should follow the directions on the can. Usually it is one hour after you final coat of paint or 24 hours. Total time for all four wheels should be around 6 hours. Have fun and take your time.

By the way I have a picture in my sig.

your final finish will reflect your prep work so take your time when sanding and get EVERYTHING

another tip lightly cover the tires with soap so if you do get ant overspray on them it will some right off because of the barrier between tire and paint

Or you can use some Tire shine like i did. All the over spray wipes right off with no effort.
