Wow already this thread is helping so many. I wish I (or someone) would have made it ~2 years ago...who knows how many paint scrapes could have been avoided by now!

I just looked at the door and didn't see anything. I never actually looked close enough at the cap. Granted, my car still doesn't have many miles on it and I've only filled it up a handful of times. I might have noticed it eventually but maybe not. Now I know...
I know you guys are just busting his ***** for pointing out something that you think was obvious. I just never took the time to actually check out every detail of my gas cap.
Now if you want to REALLY bust someones *****, some other guy just suggested jamming the cap in by the threads to get it to stay on the door...

<long explaination of how this thread came about...probably not worth reading!>
Anyway, here in Oregon it's illegal to pump your own gas, so the first time I had my car filled up I looked in the side mirror and saw my gas cap dangling on my paint! I quickly ran back and snapped at the attendant, telling him to put the gas cap in the damn clip! He was like "There is no clip..." and sure enough, I looked, and he was right! I apoligized and ask him to kindly drape the gas cap over the side of the fuel door in a way that doesn't let the inner part of the cap with gas on it touch the paint. He obliged, then he went for the regular pump when I asked for premium! I told him I needed premium, and he then started to explain to me that most cars like mine don't actually need premium and that it's a waste of money. I insisted on premium for obvious reasons after a brief and unsuccessful attempt to explain to him how octane ratings, turbos, etc. all work together. From that moment on, I knew I was going to have to monitor these damned attendants if I wanted to keep my car nice and full of premium fuel. Also, that was the night I made it my mission to figure out some way to fasten the clip-less gas cap. I didn't take another look at the gas cap until I hunted around on the internet and found out I had somehow not recognized the slits in the gas cap. Maybe if I would have been the one fueling my car initially, I would have looked a little harder and discovered the system on my own...but I made the mistake of casually verifying the observation of a guy who, for whatever reason, did pump gas for a living and did have lots of experience with gas caps.
Yeah I should have known better than to listen to a guy who pumps gas for a living, but hey everyone has their area of expertise, and I thought his was gas caps...but obviously I thought wrong. Now I even play this game where I offer the gas attendant a $5 tip if he can figure out the gas cap trick. So far none have succeeded. So, to all interested parties in Oregon, i.e. those who pump our gas, it is not so obvious. And, it wasn't so obvious even to me on that fateful night when I was wrongly convinced there was no clip by the gas "expert". If I didn't make it my mission after that to keep the attendants from screwing up my paint, I may not have ever learned about the gas cap clip system.
Fast-forward to a few years later, my friend with an Evo IX and I are both getting fueld up. I do my normal run-back-to-the-gas-cap-and-grab-it-myself-to-put-it-on-the-clip-before-the-gas-station-attendant-can-drop-it-on-my-paint routine, and notice my friend's gas cap is dangling from when the attendant left it there, rubbing gas on the paint. I promptly showed him that you must run to the fuel door before they can do that and put it on the clip, and to my surprise he didn't know there was a clip! Even just tonight I am on another thread about gas pumps and comment that the attendants never have been able to figure out the clip thing, and the other posters didn't know either! A quick EvoM search revealed no how-to on this, and a few other threads that had the wrong info on it! So, like any good EvoM citizen, I made a brief writeup and then linked the incorrect threads to the how-to.
Then, you post sarcasm about "ble ble ble you are dumb if you don't know this ble ble ble" (EDIT: I'm paraphrasing in my own words here) when it's honestly not that obvious. So, again, please, if you are here to insult people that don't have quite as much gas-cap insight as you, just please don't post. PM me if you have to and tell me what a "Sally" I am but let's not clutter this thread with nonsensical OT type babble.

sorry for going off topic, but wouldn't it be a little more polite if you call these "monkeys", gas station attendent or simply attendent.
but again, thanx for the wonderful insight

I never knew that either about the gas cap and I swear I read the manual. But I don't know why anyone would let the gas cap dangle or hang it over the hinge. It sits nicely on the left side of that ledge under the gas hole.
Gas hole.
Gas hole.

wow i only filled up once but i held the gas cap in my hand so i don't ruin the paint on the car. i was almost going to cut the tag so i can put the gas cap else where when pumping. thanks for the how to. lol
