caliper clearcoat refresh... remove caliper?

I'm about to chip my peeling clearcoat off my brembo calipers and put new clearcoat on as described here (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh....php?t=158966).

For those of you that have already done this, did you first remove the calipers before you chipped the old clear off, cleaned the calipers, sanded, and painted?

... or were you successful keeping the calipers connected to the brake lines? If so what masking precautions do you suggest? Thanks!

So i did this with the calipers on the results were mediocre. I think I might paint the entire calipers black and use new vinyl brembo decals.

I got another suggestion to use a clamp on the brake lines to keep fluid from going everywhere (if you disconnect the calipers from the lines).

Trying to just zip tie plastic baggies around the ends of the lines does not work!!! I believe either the pinhole at the end of the line needs to be blocked, or the line needs to be clamped.

I'll try to post pics soon, but like I said the results were mediocre.

The good news is, the skin on my hands is starting to recover from all of the brake fluid that covered them when I tried to stop up the brake lines by using tape, plastic bags, and zip ties.

you can always have your calipers powdercoated the color of your choice.

How much does that usually cost? I want to powdercoat mine, but I've heard it's expensive.

at the local shop to me, it was only $300 to have 4 18" wheels powdercoated, so i can't see the calipers even being that much. i'd probrably estimate between $150-$200.

Just an update (based on a PM to another evoM member)

Here are the links I found that talk about re-clearing/painting calipers:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=278034

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=158966

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=255591 (write-up on page 4)

I actually had a terrible time with mine. The main reason was because I tried to take the remove the brake lines from the calipers and I didn't have anything good to stop up the lines. Errant brake fluid got everywhere and basically took of my fingerprints!

You can go to your local auto store, get (black rubber) vacuum caps to plug the lines (thanks for the suggestion hondaguy!) and you should be able to alleviate your problems with brake fluid. I'm not sure what size works best, so you might want to measure the fitting first. Also, I have heard that clamping the line helps (from wartallon). Then, remove your calipers from the car. clean all the brake dust off with brake cleaner.

If you are just re-clearing, you will have to do a lot of wet sanding and peeling with your finger nails. This takes a long time, but the more patient you are the better they will turn out. Once all of the old (fading) clear is removed, hit the calipers with new 5-6 coats of new clear. It helps if you have a heat gun to cure the clear in-between coats. The oven works as well.

Personally, when I get some time, I am just going to repaint my calipers because I think it will probably be less time consuming than re-clearing. I'm just not sure if I want to go with red again, or black?
