custom tail lights help

ive been searching the "how to's" and even some evodave threads. some of which are old and have expired pictures. im planning on taking apart a spare set of factory taillights to paint the chrome housing. ive read u can dremel them, but wondering if anyone has cooked them similair to the headlights? if so what temp n how long. or if anyone can help me find an up to date DIY for taking taillights apart it would be appreciated. ive been searching for an hour or so with little luck. thanks a bunch

try a different forum. I did my altima's headlights for about 5-7 minutes at 300. Best best is to put them in and just watch them. If you start seeing melting pull em out with oven mits quick. You'll probably have to do it a couple times before it comes out completely...definitely a pain in the *** process. Make sure you put them on a flat surface and aluminum foil the bottom - otherwise you'll get grill marks like on mine. Buy some epoxy weather sealant for closing up when done.

Whatever you do...don't dremel them.

I am not sure of the thread you might find it in another search. Someone posted that they did the taillights just the same as the headlights are done no dremel needed.

I found it during a search before because I do not want tails that have been dremeled myself. Now I just need to get busy and buy another set of tails and heads so that I can bake them and if I mess them up still have a good set of lights.

I have found that changing your wording around in the search brings up different things each time. Either that or this search is not as user friendly as some others I am used too.

Here is a thread where the guy used a heat gun to heat the sealant as well. Then just like when using the oven to heat the tails he used a hobby style knife to cut the sealant.

If you don’t have a heat gun or access to one I would say follow the instructions for the oven in the headlights thread. Either way it might take some time but you do not have to worry about messing anything up with the dremel.

Hope this helps some, and good luck. Let us see the end result when done.

According to defarmer69, the evom tail light guru, you must dremel them. They do not come apart with heat.
