How TO: release throw out bearing
Can some one tell me when you would need to release your throwout bearing and exactly what it does when you release it, not sure but my car will not go into gear while it is runing and is engaged regardless of the clutch being pressed. throw out bearing seemed to be the logical explanation...
^^ LOOK up thru the service hole plug on the bottom of the trans. ^^
normally you need to release the TOB when ur doing a clutch job and right before you take the tranny off the engine.

so when you release the TOB its just for preporation for removing the tranny, and working on the clutch?
An extra point: I always had problems until I realized what is actually happening when you are pressing the TOB toward the plate.
The part in the pressure plate has a lock-like device that can only be release when the TOB is completely pressed against the pressure plate. You then use the screw driver(or pry-tool of choice) to keep the spring depressed while you "pop" the TOB out of the lock. It rarely will come unlocked smoothly, which is why you have to pry it to get it unlocked.

Well I just finished up doing exactly what is described by evo moto and this thread. Four hours of prying twisting and the furthest I got was shoving the fork back to ins open position. Everything else went so smooth here I was thinking this was a snap. Defenitly a ego shunt even if you know what needs to be done. Anyone have a grenade? =D
For anyone struggling a lot with this, after a long few hours of trying I was able to slip a pry-bar with a bent handle above the shift fork to push the top of the hub into the pressure plate. The TOB removed much easier at that point by twisting from the bottom and pushing the fork toward the block.

I don't suppose you have a picture of this do you? This would make the explanation a little easier to understand. I think I have a mental picture of what you are doing, but would like to know 100%
I cant get mine to pop off....I get the screwdriver in there and try to turn it to pop it off and the TOB doesnt move there is no possible way that i have tryed to get this thing off...is there another way?
bump!! if your TOB absolutely will not release like mine wouldn't, you can unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel with the transmission still attached to the motor. you have to go through the clutch fork hole. just take the boot off, shine a flashlight in, then have someone rotate your crank with a 1/2" ratchet in the crank pulley to expose each bolt. use a u-joint and a medium extension to get at them.
that little trick saved us hours more of struggling, and would've saved about 6 hours if we had thought of it sooner.

How do you know if the TOB is released? The clutch fork won't move at all toward any any side. From what I am understanding, the tranny/engine will not separate if the TOB is not released right? I can't get the tranny to separate from the engine block.
