ECU extension Harness?
ECU extension Harness?
Wow, $130+ for a bunch of wires and some plugs. Surely we could make our own for cheaper. So, does anyone know which plugs would need to be purchased in order to perform said task?
trust me when i say that it will cost you MORE than $130 to make it yourself
those plugs are not readily available and you have to get them from the manufactur of the plugs or digikey.. even if you know the part #, most of them have a certain minimum limit you have to buy (either number of plugs or $$$ amount)
I was able to talk my way into getting some samples from the japanese office but that was VERY lucky.. not many people can do that

I tried to make them back when the Evo first came out.. I got a few from AMP, but some of the components require a minimum bulk order... which means that it would have cost me a few thousand dollars to get a bulk of parts.. then the cost of assembling them..
The truth is the connectors cost at most about $40 and I actually have a few of them.. but you need a special crimping tool, and a few other things.. It would take several hours to assemble one if you don't have alot of experience, plus you want to be certain that they will work.. so everything has to be tested.
Don't get me wrong, it can be done.. but after all the effort, I ended up buying a harness through Z1 Performance, (and got a second backup from Skunk2 Racing)

malibujack, skunk2 makes a harness that works for your evo?
it's not the cost.. it's the bulk requirement.. AMP told me that they special manufacture them (no stock) so they need a run of like 500 connectors.. when i only need ONE or two

OK, so I did some research and found absolutely nothing. Couldn't even find the things in bulk. Where did you purchase the Skunk harness from because Z1 is out of stock?

That is absolutely correct.. From what I know the only manufacturer of these harnesses is Field, which is part# CN-4 (FWIW Its the part number for the Acura NSX)
Skunk2 Racing (Aka Group-A Autosports) is the only "Recognized" US importer of these parts for Field. However Lancershop, Z1 Performance, Buschur Racing, and a few other shops do import and stock them.
I do actually have a two harnesses, one brand new, in a box, and I have another extension harness prewired with an ApexI S-AFC and S-AVCR. However I don't generally sell my old parts, I try to trade them for other items of value that I might need.
And your absolutely right about AMP and their limited production of those connectors, the female connectors are widely available, however the header portion is made to order for 3 japanese companies through the years, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Honda (There may be a few others since quite a few companies shared the Mitsubishi PCM such as earlier Hyundai and some Dodge products)
There is another company that also manufactures the SAME header (AMP # Cross reference) but I do not recall who, and they also only manufacture to order.
The minimum order's for each of the items can be different, so you end up ordering enough so you have parts to assemble everything with very few leftovers.. (Sort of like 12 hot dogs in a pack and 10 buns in a bag)

most of the manufacturers tell you to get it from their distributor, who has a reverse pricing structure.. meaning:
1000 pieces at $500 (2 for a dollar)
750 pieces at $450
500 pieces at $400
250 pieces at $350
etc
and you end up with like 10000 pieces of junk you don't need
