Hacking off a length of the stock ant. will cause a mis-match which will degrade reception but it should still work for close stations. Not that I recomend it but even a metal coat hanger can work reasonably well as an ant.
I took mine completely off and still get the stations that I listen to just fine so I would suggest that you do the same before you hack your ant. If you still get reception with no ant. then the hacked ant. may work well enough for you.
Getting the open stub wet is not a problem as there is no voltage applied to it by the receiver.
