Ditch the crash beam? NOT A CHANCE.
When you remove the crash beam, you can actually see the sheet metal in the back of the car flex. If you backed into a pole, or had someone lightly tap the back of the car, there would be TONS of damage to the back of the car... I don't know about you, but I would hate to have my car totaled for a light back hit.
I modded my crash beam as per usual (took it to a weld shop and paid $60 for an hour of labor to have them do it), re-installed it. I then removed all the factory lighting and plate mounting from the bumper support as I don't like bent metal on my car.
I then made/installed a piece of carbon fiber that goes across the upper painted section and covers the large JDM plate hole. I cut squares in the top of the carbon fiber and mounted the plate like factory with the factory screw mounts and screws.
As for lights, I took a thin sheet of carbon fiber, and drilled 8 5/16" holes in it and installed and silicone glued 8 white ricer LEDs from my local parts shop (for $8). I mounted this piece above the plate from the back side (with a 1/2" spacer). I then drilled and riveted all of the carbon fiber to the JDM bumper to make it perminant. If I didn't want to go to the trouble of making the LED panel, I would use LED plate bolts which are available at any custom motorcycle shop. In fact, this was my first plan, but they didn't arrive in time, and my car was in pieces, so I needed something. the LED pannel works perfect, and shows off the carbon fiber plate panel nicely.
The carbon fiber backing plate fits in perfectly with my carbon fiber bumper, wing, and exhaust shield. The only reason I made the LED plate from carbon fiber was because I had it lying around. You could use fiberglass, plastic, or whatever else you have lying around.
I'd show pictures, but my camera is out of juice... maybe later tonight.
