How to loosen timing belt tensioner?

Any DIYS on loosening the timing belt tensioner? I know there is a small tool to do it with but how exactly do you loosen it? And the belt shouldn't have to come off to do so, just the cover, correct?

FWIW, i have the AMS tool that goes down to relieve pressure on the hydraulic tensioner and the cam gear holder. i also have a Jay Racing tool for the tensioner pulley. all three are worth their weight in gold.
i used to do it without the cam gear holder. it's possible buy much more difficult.
