how can i fix chips in my carbon fiber
 

So, I have a couple pieces of cf on my ix that where on when I bought it... I love the look of the bare fiber but there are a couple chips that go deep, all the way down to the thread. i've been googling every combination i can think of but all i come up with is how to's for fixing the fade. is there any way to fix chips? the thread is in tact, but even when the car is cleaned up and sparkling, those chips drive me crazy.

Unless you plan on re-clear coating the entire piece there's not much you can do to cover them up. You can try filling them with a clear nail polish if they are small but you will still see the mark where you filled it. There's no real way to cover the holes without doing the whole piece.

Use the official carbon fiber touchup paint kit.

I bought a seibon cf hood and it had spider cracks from where the hood latch was bolted up and where I would have to push down. They said nothing could be done about it except to redo it as wazzelby said.

so i f i re clear the entire piece that won't effect the strength of the piece... not that it needs to be that strong anyway. it's the splitter, I was thinking of scrapping it anyway because my driveway is steep, and the tint is so dark i'm worried about curbing it trying to come in at an angle. I can't see **** at night out of my windows. I'm thinking of scrapping the tint as well.

plus the chips are deep, the largest is about an inch in diameter and it's a gaping hole all the way down to the carbon threads. I'd have to sand the whole thing down all the way to the fiber and then throw god knows how many coats of clear on. or could i just sand most of it down to almost the fiber and just put an extra coat or two on the chipped areas until they were flush with the rest and then coat it until i'm satisfied with it?

Sand whole thing completely. Do about 4 coats of clear minimum over the whole thing. Wet sand and buff afterwards for mirror finish. Good luck

Yea re clearing the whole thing is your best bet.

I have some chips in my CF too along with some fade. After tons of opinion gathering, reclearing is the route to go with. I did get the Sharpie suggestion a couple of times though.

Will I damage the carbon sanding all the way down to it? I guess the rule of thumb is to be patient and take your time and be careful. I don't want to screw up the weave cause the actual carbon is perfectly fine

once you get cracks in carbon fiber, they cannot come completely out. the resin itself soaks completely down into every thin strand on the fabric. once its cracked, you have a good chance of also having the fabric slightly cracked too. once that happens, you're SOL for repair. to repair little knicks, clear nail polish will work for the repair. scuffs, as stated above, can be repaired with a few coats of clear and a little lovin'.

If it's bad and it bothers you, get a new one
