I think Mitsu designed the hood vent for letting air out from the engine compartment therefore reducing the underhood temp. Wouldn't the intake scoop defeat that purpose?

yeah but some poeple want to sacrifice that puprose to get better performance by directing the air to the inteake..but good point.
