with a MAF car (Mass Air Flow Sensor) you need to recirculate (EVO)

with a MAP car (Manifold Absolute Pressure) you don't need to recirculate

MAF means all air entering the engine is metered by the MAF sensor (on the intake) with this measurement the engine supplies fuel (so your MAF is telling your engine how much air is going in which tells your engine how much fuel to put in)

So if you have a BOV that vents to atmosphere what you are doing is this:
(JUST AN EXAMPLE)
10 gallons of AIR are entering the intake and the MAF meters 10 gallons coming in
Then shift and your BOV opens letting out 1 gallon of air after your MAF took the reading.

So your engine dumps enough fuel for 10 gallons of Air when only 9 gallons of Air are actually making it into your engine.

This makes you run rich (too much air too little fuel) while the bov is open and venting... rich means there is too much gas and too little air to make all the gas burn up so the unburned gas gets shot out the engine into the exhaust system and ignites making a backfire sound and sometimes if there is enough extra fuel sending a flame out the tail pipe. No of which cause the car any real harm.

When you recirculate....
The BOV vents the air back into the intake AFTER the MAF so it is not re-metered there for 10 gallons enter the intake and are metered the BOV goes off 1 gallon of air is put back into the intake after the maf (your basically taking some of the air from the end of it route (its route being in the intake threw the maf into the turbo out the turbo into the IC pipes into the IC into more IC pipes then past the BOV then into the throttle body and finally into the engine via the intake manifold) so when you recirculate you don't let air out of the system so 10 gallons of air stays in your path and the correct amount of gas is used since you didn't lose any air, all the recirculation BOV is doing is taking some of the extra air out and putting it back into the system at the beginning after the MAF to relieve pressure that will slow the turbo.

MAP cars are great because they use Manifold (as in intake Manifold) absolute pressure (Psi) to meter out fuel. So once the air gets into intake manifold after the BOV the air is metered and fuel is added.
The basic difference is the with MAF the air is metered BEFORE the BOV so letting air out will cause issues, but with MAP the air is metered AFTER the BOV so letting air doesn't matter.
