are these 02 housings as prone to cracking as tubular manifolds?

I was wondering the same thing. This may be a dumb question also, but does it work with an aftermarket turbo?

my guess is that it wouldn't work with an aftermarket turbo b/c it is fitted perfectly to the stock turbo.

the only reason i ask about the cracking is that the way the helix 02 is made looks a LOT like the way tubular manifolds are made.

I have this o2 housing on my evo for over 15+k miles now. And most of you know that I constantly test fitting, changing parts, and doing dyno pulls whenever there's new parts available. So I can safely to say this unit is very reliable for the money.

The weight savings of this o2 housing is about 5lbs less than factory unit

O2 housing should be *much* cooler than manifold for 2 reasons:
- further from exhaust ports
- turbine in the way and absorbs much of the exhaust heat/energy

Therefore I doubt a tubular o2 housing would be prone to cracking.

Guys, believe it or not this o2 housing has quieted my car down at cruising speeds, I run the Helix o2 housing with the version 2 dp, Ultimate Racing cat delete (Helix is of the same design), and a RMR cat back. around 2500 rpm I swear I don't hear the exhaust note any more, and it is definitely less high pitch at 3000 rpm highway cruise speed. When I first started the car up it had basically been sitting for a month so I was not used to the sound any more, but it "seems" that after about a day of driving the o2 housing and new dp have settled in and quieted down. Even my buddy with wrx noted that my exhaust is quieter than before. Just thought I'd share this with everyone.

I'm not really sure about making the exhaust quieter (sounds the same to me, but it was pretty loud originally though), but this O2 housing increased my boost by 0.5 psi and top end might be a little smoother. On/off throttle seems smoother too, maybe a manifestation of quicker spool. Hey, has anyone reinstalled the stock heat shielding using that one top bolt?

Edit: After driving around a little bit more, I think it might be a little quieter at cruising speeds, probably because a stock bracket connecting the old O2 housing to the chasis isn't used with the Helix one. Either way, it's a great price from a great vendor

good question. Cal do you think it is possible to reinstall the stock heat shield with this o2 housing? I wonder if there are any stock mounting points left off of the housing to refit the shield. This would be cool since not all of us have the cash to have this item thermal coated.

Quite honestly, I have not tried to put the stock heat shield back on my car after the o2 housing install, therefore I dont' know. But from looking at the stock unit and the Helix unit, it looks like the heatshield won't be able to go back on because the stock unit has 2 mounting locations while the helix unit doesn't.

Thanks

Cal

Here's a good option for any concerned about not having the heatshield fit any more, didn't know it was so cheap for the o2 housing or I would have sent mine off.

Quoting Zeus
"Email brad@performancecoatings.com and tell Brad you want your O2 coated with 2000 degree (their color of your choice). I was quoted $100 for the manifold, $45 for the turbine housing, and $35 for the O2 housing."
