HID install help on 2005 GSR
HID install help on 2005 GSR
I purchased this 6000K HID for my 05' GSR and went ahead to install it. Pulled the bumper and the headlight assembly off, plugged in all the necessary connections, and nothing. Then I plugged the stock 9006 bulb back in and it worked so it wasn't a blowned fuse. I got tired of trying every combination of harnesses the kit came with and still nothing.
So I thought to myself either the bulb or the ballast is bad, so I ghetto rigged a wire to the battery straight to the ballast and bam it worked so I know the bulb and ballast are not bad. Then... I decided to open up the manual to see what's gong on. It says for "self-checking" circuit headlamps, you need to use some type of relay. So **** this is the second time I pulled my bumper and headlamp (first time I bought the H-11 bulb.. which was wrong).
Anyone had any success installing aftermarket HID on an 05' Evo or any year Evo?

Glad my 04 still had factory HIDs but I've probably got the answer for you.
The direction you're headed with the direct wiring is what you need to do. Something about newer cars not getting true 12 volts to the headlights, it's more like less than 9volts because they go through a relay or something. The ballasts need at least 9volt to power up. Hence connecting the ballast directly to the battery worked. I bought a 7000K HID kit off ebay for my wife's 03 accord V6 thinking its gonna be a plug n play deal. Fustrated the hell out of me so I decided to have a shop install them. They are the ones told me about the voltage. So I decided to buy a different set that was made to be a direct connection type. I'm happy because it was 9000K for a little bit more than what I got off ebay.
Long story short, the tuner shops can probably rig something up for you or you can buy something less of plug n play and more like plug n do some wiring and then play.
Hopes this helps and makes you feel like you're not a dumbA$$, cus you're not. The people who sell these PnP kits never tell you about this.

Well.. I found this harness for 9005/9006 we sell at work so I hope it works. I splitted the harness into 9005 and 9006 and will try it out. I'll post the results when I'm done. Go figure why Mitsubishi did not go standard on the 05's.

Well, I figured out the problem. The 05 GSR's have reversed polarity on the 9006 plugs. That's why when I plugged them in they did not work and when I connected directly to the battery they worked. Pretty much I just used the extra harness that came with the kit and cut and reconnected positive and negative. Go figure Mitsubishi again for doing this.

you have to upgrade the fuses to 30 amp fuses, thats what i found out today, i bought a new set of phillips 12000k HIDS with all the connections, for 200 bucks seems like an easy install.
