Cleaning Rags, Mitts and Sponges

I’ve done a search and have not come across any satisfactory answers. How do you guys maintain your car’s exterior cleaning materials such as cleaning mitts, sponges and towels? I wash mine after each use in the washer using just a SMALL touch of detergent to knock the dirt loose. After the cycle has finished I start it over at rinse and let that run until the end. I worry about the small dose of detergent, but I have to use something to encourage the dirt to leave.

Best wishes,
F86sabre

The Cajun Way...

I use a strong mix of soap and water with a wash mit. To dry I use a california water blade to get the standing water and then a sheeps skin chamois (sp?) to finish drying. Then I drive it aound the block to shake the water out of the cracks and go back over it with the chamois to get the drips off.

I use Meguires NXT, or Turtle wax Nano Wax apllies with the normal pad. I use a mocro fiber towel to get the wax off. Then if it is dusty go over the car with one of those red brush things (duster). That helps kill the static so dust wont stick to your car as bad.

I wash my rags, towels, and mitts together in a combination of detergent and ammonia. I allow to go the whole wash and rinse cycles. I never use bleach--too harsh, or fabric softener--it screws up the towels'/ rags'/mitts' absorbency. I put towels and rags in the dryer--once again, without the fabric softener sheets--however, I do not put my mitts in the dryer, those I air dry.

I use a bit of laundry detergent. I keep all my old t shirts( I have close to 40) to use as rags.

Bogie, Theibault and lemacfar, thanks for the input. I think the rest of you may need to work on reading comprehension just a little. While I appreciate the input, I was asking about cleaning the rags you clean with, not the cleaners you use. It sounds like the rest of you are doing the same thing I am.

Thanks and best wishes,
