Alpine 9853 question
On the motorized detachable face HU's, be careful... If you, like many others, take the face off many times a day for security issues you might come into a problem with small plastic components breaking off. Just like my Rockford I had; ones of the plastic side pieces that attached to the HU broke off and wouldn't allow for the detach function any more. Just be careful...
BTW, I love my CDA-9827!

I'm looking for something that will help me figure out my amp - like setting crossover and gain. I also wonder if there is any "test cds" that help you get the best sound out of your system that anyone would recommend or is it just better to make your own with some songs - and what songs would they be?
As far as the 9853 I guess its a mixed result. The only thing I'm worried about is the motor failing, other than that I like the features.

I went to the store to check out the unit - ended up buying the 9853 - the guy there told me that manufacturer's seemed to have got into trouble quoting misrepresented output voltages. Now they must represent the true figures and not the "peak" figure. I went with my gut (and your guyz help) and got the Alpine. They stand behind their stuff. I remember last X-mas, actually the 24th, i bought a pair of type r coaxials. I put one in with a spacer and the basket cracked at the seam. I had to send it back to Alpine in California. 2 weeks later i received a box with a brand new pair of type r's (spr-17lp). Its with that show of customer satisfaction that keeps me with them - wish more company's were like that
Hey chaps...
I bought the 9853 - which i really am starting to like, but im having some difficulty with some of the settings.
For those of you who have this - riddle me this - how do you set the crossovers to optimize the settings. I currently have them set to 0 0 100 on all of them, but i cant really tell a difference with using it. Can anyone explain what is supposed to happen.
The headunit is going to an Alpine MRV-F340 amp to 2 type r speakers and 2 MB quart speakers in the front. I have found that the MX function makes the speakers go nutz so i turned it off. As far as the EQ, has anyone set this up manually? The factory presets are pretty good though so im not sure i need to bother.
Anyone use I-personalize? Does anyone know where to get other peoples settings? or is there a website with a database?

I work at Best Buy and 9853 and 9855 are great HU's. Really the only difference between the two is the 9855 has a digital image background and a few little bells and whistles. If you do go and get that unit at a BB location be sure to get the warranty. I haven't yet seen a problem with the motorized face, but is better to be safe than sorry.
I personally love all of Alpine's audio equipment. The Type R line, i feel is really good. I got 6.5" Type R's in my car, all the way around, and love them!
I'm sure you'll be very satisfied with the head unit, if you do end up getting it. Everyone that i talk to about Alpine's stuff is very happy with their products.

Hey, I don't mean to jack this thread, but i just have a couple of questions regarding the 9853 and 9855. Do they both support iPods and if they support other languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc...)?
Thanks
Thanks
I purchased the 9853 also. I had heard (and read) about the faceplate problems. From what I found, Alpine may have done a recall on this issue this summer (different sources, take with a grain of salt). The dealer that installed mine said that they had not had any problems with the face plate. As far as the settings, I'm sure you know this, but you can go to their website and download settings, burn to a disc, and upload to your HU. I have no need for it now since I am still using stock stereo other than HU (SSL). I have been really please with mine but only had for 2 weeks. Good choice IMO.
Thanks Mit5u ES, So have you been having any trouble with the HU so far and is the glidebar a nice feature or a downside? After reading all the problems with the alpine i was thinking of the kenwood xxv-01d but then it didn't compare to how the alpine 9855 looks. When do we find out about the 2006 Alpine lineup, because i really don't want to spend $400 on a HU that doesnt work or fails becuase of a manaufacturer defect.
I havent been having any trouble. I'm really happy I bought this one. The glidetouch feature isn't difficult - just a little playing around with it and it begins to feel really easy to use. I have found that when its cold outside (as NJ getting its winter now), if you leave the face in the unit and try to use it, the glide bar gets tough to push. Just a bit about the glidebar - it uses the touch pad technology to scoll through various parts and the "bar" itself pushes in. So its basically a bar with a touchstrip on it. It feels solid though and the unit is very nice. I think as long as you repect it and not thrash the thing it should last you a very long time (or at least until the next models come out
).
Getting the EQ figured out manually is a bother - so its best to use the presets. The crossover settings i haven't yet figured out - so details to follow. If anyone knows chime in.

Well i have done car audio for years , and alpine is my fav as far as HU. The internal amp is awesome and pack alot of power, but the best thing to it is the sound control.
The eq and settings were tricky at first but im telling u once u learn how to use them properly the sound shaping is awesome. Just read over the manual and sit there and play with the eq for an hour or so using a the same song (good quality), cause if u use the presets your missing out on alot
