Some great pics in this thread, but can anyone explain the what benefit there is to running wheels that are wider than the tires on them?

some do it cuz they like the look, others do it so that they dont have to do fender mods to run wider wheels and then theres racers that do it so that it stiffens the side wall for better turn in response (less side wall flex or roll over). thats what i've gathered, others can chime in.
