My new ride..... Evo V RS
My new ride..... Evo V RS
Well I bought my 2nd Evo on 2 days before Christmas.
(My first one I had was a USDM Evo VIII which I had for just over a year when I was living in Chicago).
Well I'm back in England now and I fancied something a little rawer so I went for an Evo 5 RS.
So far I'm loving the new motor and have a smile from ear to ear everytime I take her out.
The car has 31500 miles and is minty mint inside out. No dings or scratches on the bodywork and the interior is mint too.
The RS is fairly stock. She has a 3" stainless exhaust which is too loud for my liking... I've no idea who makes it but I really do need to do some research into who makes a quieter exhaust. It also has a Bailey bov which I think needs replacing ASAP...it makes the car judder on light pedal cruising between 70 and 80. There is also a GReddy 63mm boost gauge with A-pillar mount (this needs hooking up correctly). It has a clifford alarm with intellistart which is kinda nice to have too. It's actually got Evo VI seats and door cards - upgraded to electric windows (I have the original RS windup jobbies too). The car also has Air Con, which I believe is a factory option (again nice to have and rare on a RS).
Externally the car has tinted windows, de-tangoed front indicators and side repeaters. The wing mirrors have been colour coded (not sure if I like that... kind of takes the RSness away). It did have white/clear rear lights but I hated them and swapped the originals back in as soon as I got home (personally I think they looked chavy). She's got white Ralliart mudlfaps (would prefer red but better than nowt). She also has OEM Mitsubishi rain gaurds which I love because they are nice and small and blend in with the tint. The car has a a OEM GSR front bumper complete with fogs (I prefer this bumper... looks better than the RS bumper in my opinion and fogs are nice to have). The car has a cheapy private plate but I want to get some new ones made (standard set up) as I don't like the font(again chavy) and it has the previous owners nick name on the bottom.
The car also has evo VIII wheels which I'm not too keen on (I don't think they suit the V)... I'm thinking of buying some 18" Revolution Milleniums in either white or gunmetal.
So all in all I'm pretty chuffed. There are a few changes I want to make but I'm very happy with what I've bought and I feel the car has bags of potential.
OK here are a couple of crappy pics I took with my camera-phone. I've not washed it since I had her and I've gone through a tank and a half of petrol... so she aint the cleanest! haha. I will detail her and take some decent pics in a nice spot, with my SLR. Guess these pics will do for now.

Feel free to pass good or bad comments..... this is my first V and I hope I've done OK! Can you spot anything I've missed?
Cheers,
Karl
PS. The Bailey sticker in the rear window needs to go too.

Well I'm not sure I've had it long enough to draw a true comparrison.
First impression are the 5 feels much quicker. I'm not sure if this is to do with it being lighter or the fact that it has shorter gearing. In the VIII I had basic mods but always craved a lot more power... from the V RS it feels quick enough for me right now and just devoirs country roads. I guess the RS is harder to drive quicker... needs more attention... the VIII was foot down, all out and the car would do the work. I guess the V feels a little smaller and lower than a stock VIII. The stock suspension feels better than an 03 VIII (which is under dampened in my eyes). I've tracked my VIII and I knew it's limits and how it handled.... I need to do this in the V to compare the handling properly.
The interior on the V is not as modern as the VIII obviously... the heater controls are old school but they actually feel really solid and mechanical and the don't bind up like the VIII so I prefer the 5's heater controls lol. Driving position is very similar and the wheel is perhaps a little bigger on the V. The steering is definately quicker on the RS. My V has GSR VI seats... which are supportive but the bases aren't as wide as my old VIII seats (one of the first things I noticed when I sat in the car). Gear change is very direct on the 5..... it has more feel to it... like clunk it's in... hard to describe.
The HID lights are better on the VIII for sure.
Visability on the 8 is better.
Road and wind noise on the 5 is worse.
My 5 only has 31500 miles on it and feels really tight... I'm sure reliablity won't be as good as my 03 VIII but only time will tell.
Overall the 5 and the 8 feel VERY similar... you can tell they are an evolution of the same car. The RS is rawer than the VIII but the 8 is more polished.
I will post more when I know more but I hope this comparison can give you guys an idea of what a V RS is like comparred to stock 8's.
Any questions fire away!

Well standard V RS's weigh 1260 kg or 2778 lb.... mine isn't stock as it has Evo 5 GSR front bumper and fogs, electric windows, aircon and VI seats and 8 wheels.. so probably a little heavier. She's a mutt lol

my English wife called my car a "Y-Boy" car, is that less applicable these days over yonder? i would go with the Apex-i Noir exhaust for great flow and less 'sound'

I think when it was imported she had Evo VI rims on and the guy I bought it off put evo 8 rims on.
I'm thinking of getting rid of the VIII enkei's and buying some of these:
Revolution Milleniums

I think they look great! A little bit like the Compomotive MO. Proper rally slag styleee
haha
