Check out my custom shift boot.
wow very original
Some thing's just really don't need a write up.
I kept the trim ring with mine and used the same way that the stocker mounts in there:

since that picture I put a zip tie through where the drawstring goes and tied it around much neater.
This is what I was talking about:

super super easy:
-Take bottle out of bag
-pour a glass of crown. Neat or on the rocks, that's your call.
-have a sip
-pull of the shift knob and the entire center console trim
-take off the 4 screws
-pull that ring off
-pull off old shift boot
-Take a sip of crown
-cut open the bag
-sammich the bag between the ring and the trim
-screw ring back on, I chose to screw into the bag to make it more secure
-another sip of crown
Disclaimer: this is for the 5 speed, no clue on the 6speed:
-as for the top, take the stock piece that the top of the old shiftboot used, put a zip tie through the bag, cinch it down.
-finish your glass of crown.
-reinstall.
whammo, new shift boot, 15 minute job, tops.
Now go polish of the bottle and don't drive.
