How many times can you buff before you go through the clear?
Not directed at you PatricksEvilEvo but its good to see someone else using an orbital. Only $175? You're crazy, my minimum would probably be $225 for exterior. I've been using Griot's random orbital and products on the Evo for 7 years now and it still looks new minus the typical rock chips.
I am a professional detailer (currently my side job) but I do full 5 step exterior details all spring summer and fall, I've tried every compound out there and I've done pretty much every car manufacturer, Mitsubishi does use a clear coat, it is thin. You can touch it up doing it the correct way, not just simply brushing in the scratches. OP if you have ?'s Pm me I can help you out. I charge $175 exterior, $85 interior and I can't keep up with the customers, my offtime is back-ordered

Hmm don't know how you call yourself a pro detailer and say Mitsubishi uses clear coat... Most evo 8's are single stage paint and do not have a clear coat (Hence why you get color transfer on the buffing pads.) A good detailer will have a paint thicknes gauge and will know how much paint he has to work with.
When I say professional, I've had no real professional training but I've been taught by the best and I detailed somewhere around 30 cars last summer and every single customer wants their cars done in the spring + a crap ton more customers that have seen my work and want more. Yes I can charge more and yes it is a LOT of work but I keep it reasonable.
To truly touch paint up for rock chips and or deep scratches, paint in the bad area with a very very fine paint brush, let cure, then use the clear coat, one very very light coat, then as much as you want so there's actually a little extra. Then once it's fully cured you use a cutting compound and you buff it down to flush. Trust me I do this a lot. The first 3 years I owned my Evo I did nothing but hand wash it once in a GREAT while and I live in western NY, yes it was driven in the salt then. Once I got into detailing, I decided first thing was to do the Evo. I had road tar EVERYWHERE, literally from the sun it bakes on as one with your clear, scratches out the ***, every single pannel had scratches and scuffs etc and here was the outcome
Biggest key is using the right materials and having the time and patience, detailing the right way is not something that's done in 4 hours, a full detail without any paint correction takes a good 10-12 hours just me alone.
Also one more key to add, NEVER buff any edges or you WILL cut right through the clear and paint.

This was only after 2 coats, I then put another 2 coats on.
