Custom made ash tray gauge pod
Custom made ash tray gauge pod
Although all of the critics out there will chime in and mention that you should never have gauges outside of your normal field of vision while driving, I prefer not having a bright beacon on my a-pillar or steering column that gives away that my car is modified. Therefore I decided that I would try to mount my boost gauge down in my ash tray. Being that I never look at anything other than the road and the tach under WOT, it did not matter where I put the guage.
Originally my intentions were to mount the gauge inside of the tray, and I would be able to cover the gauge if I wanted to look stealth. After trying to test fit, I realized that the center console has brackets that run underneath the tray and will not allow for a deep gauge to sit down in there without cutting everything to pieces. My next step was to mount the gauge directly in the top of the ash tray, but I quickly realized that looked gay after I cut it out. Therefore I threw in the towel and went ahead and fiberglassed a gauge pod out of the lid for the ash tray.
Below are some pics of how it sits at the moment. I still need to permanently mount the pod, so the edges do not line up correctly yet. Once finished, it should fit perfectly where the tray used to be.
Keep in mind this was done on the spur of the moment. I just wanted to see how it would turn out. I intend to build another pod, and I will spend more time on the shape and design. I would love to still have it recess into the console, and I may try doing another fiberglass pod with a reversed shape.

I appreciate everyone's kind comments. I am more than willing to build custom gauge mounts for anyone that is interested. I can do much more complex work, but this was just a quick job to get the gauge in there. If anyone really holds interest in an ashtray pod, then let me know. I will gladly redesign and bulid a cooler looking mount, and we can see who may actually want one.

i saw someone else mount an oil pressure guage to the right of the steering column IN the dash itself, it looked pretty hott.
im gonna boost this summer and am lost on where i want my gauges, ill have a/f ratio, exhaust gas temp, and boost, and maybe an oil pressure gauge.
