Bakuro's 2006 Evo IX

So I recently decided to make the step up from a 2004 Ralliart (N/A, 2.4l 4G69, Automatic) into a 2006 Evo IX. It has 101,xxx miles on it. I picked it up down in Knoxville, TN. So far it has been an awesome machine! The downsides to it were that it needs the tune cleaned up as it is running very rich, the AC compressor is dead, and most of the stereo was removed by the first owner. I am currently the 3rd owner.

It came with:
  • Volk GT-V 18" wheels painted to match the car
  • new rotors and pads
  • Tein lowering springs
  • Solid shifter cable end bushings
  • AMS intercooler
  • aftermarket Intercooler piping
  • DNP exhaust manifold
  • Megan racing O2 housing
  • HKS exhaust with test pipe
  • AMS fuel rail
  • PTE 680cc injectors
  • HKS manual boost controller
  • HKS blow off valve
  • Turbo Timer
  • Debadged
  • Paint matched VIS Carbon Fiber Hood
  • Dual A-pillar Gauge pod
  • Boost Gauge
  • EGT Gauge (disconnected)

So far I have added:
  • Ralliart Badge
  • Heat reflective tape (got rid of exhaust wrap that was on the rad hose...)
  • Shorter serp belt (AC's pulley started going bad)
  • relocated the turbo timer
  • STM Amber Side Markers
  • Short shifter (with replacement boot)
  • Shifter Assembly solid bushings
  • Heavy Weighted shift knob
  • 15mm wheel spacers to the front wheels (rears need the inner lip rolled before I space them out)
  • And I have pulled the ROM and sent it off for some cleanup

My initial review. I absolutely love it. The car pulls so hard and just keeps pulling. I kind of wish it had a 6th gear for highway cruising, but i still dont see the 5 speed as a downside. The sound of the turbo, the blow off valve, and the exhaust was music to my soul. But once I hit some curves I quickly learned that; to my own surprise, my RA takes corners MUCH more flatly than the Evo does! I never would have expected this but there was no doubting it. Turns I would take flat at 70-80mph in the RA, would greet me with a generous helping of body roll at 60mph...

So my goal is pretty clear now. The car is obviously faster in a straight line, so I need to focus on the handling. I think once I transfer over a few things from my RAs, get a new rear sway bar, and some stickier tires I'll be able to hit those curves the way I want. Other than that my main priority is to simply clean up the car (stereo, AC, maintenance, reliability mods) and enjoy the hell out of it until I can pay it off.

I am actually considering putting it back as close to stock as I can for now. I have injectors, fuel rail, bypass valve, piping and intercooler that I was going to use to turbo my RA. Then if I could just find a stock ROM. And Im not the craziest about the wheels, I guess they dont look bad. But I really like the Evo 8 Enkei's or the BBS wheels. I just figure if I put it back to stock and enjoy the car as it was meant to be, then maybe I could add the mods back or simply build the car the way that I see fit instead of picking up where the previous two owners left off... Just a thought.

Thanks for checking this out. Im sad to let the RA go, but Im really excited about seeing what I'll be capable of doing and creating with the Evo!

Thanks guys! She's been great so far.

I replaced the speakers in it this weekend. Started with the rear deck since there were no speakers back there. Moved to the tweeters. Found one hot glued to the back of the driver pillar trim. and found that the passenger side was completely missing. Then moved onto the front doors, chased down a short and switched them out. Everything sounds good except for the tweeters when its cranked up, they buzz a bit might have to pull those out and replace them at some point.

I'd like some bass now to balance it all out. A friend gave me a set of Dual 12" subs with a 600-something watt amp. But it looks horridly ricey with its LEDs, plexiglass covers, and chrome... Might disassemble it and make another enclosure after I relocate my battery to the trunk.

Going to spend some time pulling some of my good parts from my Ralliarts this week and then I'll have a nice long list of things I can do to the Evo when I get time.

A retune would do it good! Congrats on the good find! At least your staying in the Mitsubishi family! Speed density should be nice. I'm about to convert this week as well. Just waiting on my map sensor to come in.

Thank you! I do love my Mitsus. LOL! And yea thats what Im hoping too. I need to get my AFR gauge installed. I just havent had time to do it. And yea Id like to switch to speed density at some point. Im not sure what all is actually involved in that just yet. I have a 3 bar map sensor is that what you are referring to?

There's a few ways to go speed density. You will need a 4 bar map sensor, an iat sensor, and a retune. There's plenty of threads on it it's pretty cool the results on it.

So. Here is a little project I started on tonight. Parts are from my RA donor car, and some stuff that would have been used for turboing my white RA.

Im wanting to make a new gauge pod. Not one for the radio's location, the steering wheel, or the A pillar. I want them to be inline with the factory gauge cluster, out of my and anyone outside of the car's line of sight, and I want to have the space to install a double DIN stereo in the future. So that rules out the pods that you can buy, and really narrows down the locations I can use.

So here is what I came up with:

The subject, the center vents.

The piece in particular, without the clock and emergency button.

Shaky Cell pic. I removed the vent tube, and panels.

Cut out the unnecessary bits.

The future mates meet.

The goal.

So now I need to come up with a way to blend the two pieces. Then make sure that the gauges will all fit where I want them. Im planning to have my AFR, Boost, and one more gauge installed. The last gauge will be a toss up between Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, or Water Temp.

Thoughts? Comments? Advice?

Because I owned a RA for many years, and I absolutely loved that car. Ralliart was Mitsu's racing division. And I had it laying around. Evo was debadged so why not carry on the pedigree and confuse a few people who dont know what their talking about in the process. lol

So Im hoping I can tap into the Evo communities vast pool of knowledge here. The car is showing its first signs of having some sort of problem today.

I noticed the other day I had some speckles on my hood vent and had a few droplets of something on the windshield. Kinda paid it no mind at the time. However last night I passed someone on my way home and noticed a weird smell. Was kinda like burnt/burning rubber or something. So I waited a minute, then accelerated again and the smell returned for a moment. This morning on my way to work I pull up to a light and I noticed a small amount of white smoke coming out of the hood vent. I got to work and popped to hood. I could see a little bit of smoke coming up from somewhere around the turbo, I wasnt able to pinpoint a location however. I snapped a few pics of things that seemed to stand out to me.

First thing I noticed was this moisture (oil, coolant, idk?) on the lower part of the flange.

I noticed it on the manifold support and some speckles on the turbo's v-band.

And here is the hood vent shroud. the moisture speckles have multiplied...

Any thoughts, advice, words of wisdom, or solutions are highly welcome! Id like to catch this before anything serious happens.

Thanks in advance guys!

Alrighty. Got quite a few pics to show off and a few updates.

Decided to go wingless for a little bit. Here are the siblings chilling.

Pulled my Cusco Power Brace off of the Ralliart, sanded it, primed it, and painted it white. Also cleaned off the intercooler and hit it with a thin coat of black paint. Looks much better than having the faded AMS logo on it. Also found my lower intercooler piping had a small hole worn into it causing a boost leak. Lucky for me I have spare pipes laying around from what I was going to use to turbo the Ralliart. Swapped the pipes did my first oil change on it.

Fall began settling in around my house.

Turbo's n Rainbows. Too bad the Rainbow is landing in the back yard of a guy with a new WRX. LOL

Bought a Rexpeed Type-C carbon fiber spoiler from a guy on here. It has a crack in the resin so Im going to repair that. Then I'll paint the spoiler and my lip to match the car.

Thanks for checking out my thread!
