This is my build thread for my 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage to Evo IV coupe project! This first post is basically going to be where I keep the most up to date and
best overall pictures to show my progress with the conversion. For more details have a look at the rest of the thread and feel free to shoot me a pm if you have any questions for your own project! This is a video of how the project began and the first few stages of the build. It's come a long way since then! :) And a few quick shots of where the car is currently exterior wise: (now a little outdated but only minor changes have been made) Most up to date photo: Attachment 289922 And some older ones: Attachment 289923 Attachment 289924 Attachment 289925 Attachment 289926 Attachment 289927 Attachment 289928 Attachment 289929 Recently finished swapping in a 4G93 as the stock 4G15 blew and the 2.3 stroker 4G63 isn't finished yet and I did a lot of interior work at the same time. The most impressive features are the Defi Link guage set housed in an unbelievably rare Lancer GSR secondary storage box and the JDM Evo IV automatic climate control system. Most up to date picture of the interior: Attachment 289930 Right after the auto climate swap was done: Attachment 289931 The engine bay since the temporary swap: Attachment 289932 Here's links to the vids of the swap/climate control and the AWD conversion project: AWD conversion: Swap/climate control vids: Finally running! Everything from here down is old progress from when I first posted this thread up, so I'll leave it up. Some shots of the half cut I bought for the conversion! Attachment 289933 Attachment 289934 Attachment 289935 Anyway, down to business. My Dad and I spent most of the day tearing down the interior of the cut to get at the bits I wanted. (auto climate control) I haven't gotten very far with it yet, but I think I did pretty good for one days work. Just getting parts I don't need out of the way. Oil seemed good so we tried cranking it and it turns over just fine, but no spark. I'm gonna test a few theories out in the morning when I get back to the shop. I don't think there's a spark cut on Evo's is there? Well, we'll get it sorted one way or another. Here's the progress of the "interior" for the day: (EDIT: ended up being badly crankwalked) Started like this Attachment 289935 Gained some momentum Attachment 289937 Ended the day like this Attachment 289938 Also got the brakes off one side and the fenders and a few other things removed as well. Initial mod list: 5 lug conversion 1G DSM rear disc conversion GTO 4pot front brakes (homemade bracket) 17x8 Enkei RPF1's w/ 215/40/17 tires JDM Mirage Asti side skirts JDM Evo IV tails JDM Evo IV rear bumper w/ lip JDM Evo IV trunk and wing (currently in paint) JDM Evo IV gauge cluster custom 2.5in catback exhaust with cheap OBX muffler (for now...sounds surprisingly decent) el-cheapo intake (not wasting money on the 1.5L) TC Sportline front and rear strut tower braces Evo8 short shifter Let me know what you guys think! Always appreciate feedback good or bad! It's taken me a 2 years to get this far and this is kind of a slow moving build as there are a ton of technical details to sort, but I'm enjoying myself with it. (Yeah, it's been like 6 years now...) |
Good move making a new thread with a better title.
|
The first picture of the body is really nice and clean {thumbup}
Good luck with the project. Looks like a lot of work, but that will be one sneaky car when it's all done! Will you attend the DSM/Evo Shootout this year at Buschur/Norwalk, Ohio? -Shawna |
Nice..but I don't see the driveshaft....super super secret? lol. Keep us posted man.
|
i hope you make it RHD but anyway good luck
|
4g63girl: Probably not, but I should be able to make it to the factory MOD this year.
loofee: Haha nah, I can't use the OEM one cause the sedan has a 2in longer wheelbase than the coupe. Custom it is! Squeaks: Nah, no RHD for me. I could, but it's too much of a hassle and I'm more into racing than show anyway. Plus passing people on the highway is a pain with RHD. Getting ready to go do some more work to it. Should hopefully be able to get the front bumper off today and maybe even get it started if I can figure out why I don't get spark. Wish me luck! |
U truely have some skills man, this looks so overwhelming
|
good luck man, be interesting to see where this goes.
|
Very impresive
But you need to give a lower stance so it can look more aggressive |
Good luck!!! Nice work!!!!!!!
hey nice song too! ;) |

Yeah, it's overwhelming alright! Can't go any lower as it already is having some
rubbing issues with rolled and ground rear fenders. I like the stance it has now anyway. It looks great in person! (though the couple flaws show better lol) JDM tunez yo! Got some more work done. Finally got the front bumper off today. Stupid thing. Couldn't find the bolts that were holding it on for anything. Had to drop the intercooler to find the bolts. Shouldn't be a problem anymore though now that I know where they are! Front bumper will go off to the "parts to be painted corner" with the trunk and wing. Still got to get a set of coupe fenders so I can build my coudan conversion fenders. Then I just gotta paint everything and slap it all together! Diagnosed my no spark issue. Looks like the coilpacks are both fried. I thought that the Evo 8 packs were supposed to work, and they look like the same pack, but the boot that goes down to the spark plug is almost twice as long! Todays progress: Attachment 289903 Attachment 289904 Attachment 289905 Better pic of the rear end: Attachment 289906 Dash reassembled out of the car: Attachment 289907 That's about it for now. I'm meeting a guy Sunday who says he can get me the coilpacks I need. We'll see what happens! |
I want to do this so bad. I am afraid I would be halfway through it and not be able to find certain parts.
|
Nah, finding parts ain't bad at all. We have alot of hookups over at Mirageforums.net.
If you decide to go for it and need help, shoot me a pm. |
I would sell my evo 9 if I did.
|
I will say this, the 9 is a faster car than the 4/5/6 so if you want the fastest car, stick
with the 9. However, many people (including me) enjoy the driving experience of the 4/5/6 more than that of the newer cars. They just feel more raw without the driver aids. Also, a conversion like this requires alot of technical knowledge and being able to do things like weld. Hit up mirageforums.net and take a look at my3awd's build in the members rides section. His car is a good reference to the kind of work that will need to be done. He has a beautiful Evo 5 clone. |
