Is this a brake indicator?

check this out. its on the front passenger side. I'm thinkin its just a brake indicator, but why wouldn't they be on all the wheels?

*EDIT* I just checked and they're on every wheel but the driver's side. is that strange?

If it is a brake indicator, how many miles ya think I've got left on these?

heres some other pictures of the brake pad thickness. how many miles you think are left? The only reason I ask is because I've got a set of SS-S that I'm going to put on later and they're itching me in my closet right now...

These look to be about 2/3 worn. Whatever mileage you have now, take a third of that and that is approximately how much life you have left in your pads.

Uhhh....

If they're two thirds worn, you should take 1/2 of the mileage you have on them to figure out what's left.

I think.

Dang tricky fractions. I never trust 'em.

the easiest way to gauge whether you need new pads is:

look at the backing plate....notice it's thickness.....

when your pad (either inner or outer, or even both) wear down to less than the thickness of your backing plate.....you can change them out.....and not feel guilty that you wasted your pads....

....although...you can still milk the pad down to the wear indicator (pictured above)....but who wants to be driving a $30k+ car with squeeky brakes? lol

.....lookin at the pics above, it looks like you got a little bit of meat left....

just my .02 cents....

yeah 1/2 is right, as long as those pads are worn down 2/3. and since i've got 18500 then i should need to replace them in about 9K miles.

DCSilvrEvo - you can't just throw out 10,000 because if i already had 100,000 on those pads then they'd last at least 50,000 more. conversely, if i only had 3,000 miles on those pads, then they'd only last 1500 more...

Yes, to be 100% mathematically correct, it would be 1/2 of your current mileage more. But since you probably do not want to wear the pads all the way to the backing plate (as the backing plate will score your rotors), a rough real world estimate would be a third more of the mileage you already put on. This way there will still be some pad left on there before you swap them out.
