Advan Wear Issue

Hi all. Im nearing 15,000 miles on my '04 Evo VIII. My advans are close to being worn out, but they have not worn evenly. I have tried to stay on top of the rotations every 2k or 3k miles, but I haven't been religious with it. The insides of all four tires are wearing much quicker than the outside. My two rear tires are almost bald on the inside tread ring. However, the outside tread rings are just about to reach the wear bar. Here is my question - Which pair of tires is prone to more wear on the inside of the tires, front or back? Is it safe to drive on the tires for a little longer until I have the cash to buy new tires? Should I have another rotation?

Thanks for any and all info

If they are worn bald on the insides I wouldnt be driving the car in the rain if i were you. The evo usually wears on the inside due to camber set up for handling, mine are wearing more on the inside. Thats just the way it is. Id be happy if I were you getting 15k miles out of them.

Yeah, I agree with the being happy about getting 15k out of them comment. I just bought my car and after 3K, the inside fronts are totally gone and this just on normal highway driving, very little agressive driving. To answer your question, it is the front tires that wear on the insides. The only way to counter this probem is, when you are ready for your second tire rotation, 6K or so (all insides will be eaten away), take your car to a tire shop or mitsu dealer and have them remount and balance your tires, putting the right side tires on the left and vice-versa. (Since they are directional rotating tire, you have to do this) This will probably increase wear on the tires because you're switching the inside tread with a decent tread depth. Understand? I have really never heard of anyone doing this, but it would be much cheaper than having to buy all new tires after 6K or so. The funny thing is that I think the maintenance schedule from mitsu doesn't have a tire rotation till 5K or maybe even 10K.

Those Advans are rated to last 10k miles...you did a good job at 15k...I've seen many people change their tires around 5-7k. If your tires are bald DO NOT drive in the rain, you'll get no traction at all. My experience in the rain was driving 35-40 mph on the freeway with my rear end just swaying side to side...SCARY feeling!

The tires are not wearing out because of a camber setting.

Most likely it is the front toe setting. The front alignment seems to be slighty toed-out. This is why the inside of the tires wear uneven. You need to have your toe set a little in. My toe setting is zero and I still get a little more wear to the inside. A touch of toe-in will fix the problem.

I got 30,000 miles out of my Advans. When the insides got too bald I pulled off the tires and put the bald edge out. My miles are almost all highway, but there are some auto-x miles as well.

Mine are on the way out and I've barely got 7500 on the car. Of course, some of them is driving agressivly, but I wasnt expecting them to last 20k miles anyway so its no big worry for me.

15k for the Advans isn't bad. Time for new tires.

Thanks for all the replies. Im getting a big paycheck in a couple of weeks so Im gonna pick up a new set of tires as soon as it comes in. Im thinking about the Michelin Pilots Sport PS2's. I am gonna be doing a bit of driving in the next few weeks before I can purchase new tires though - any thoughts about if it would help if I aired the advans up a little bit....would this help wear more on the center of the tires as opposed to the inner tread ring?

Yep, toe setting is the reason for the innner edge wear. 15k is great for the Advans. The PS2s are super (my son has a set on his AMG) but not as grippy on dry surfaces as the Advans.

15K is about average. Remember, you can't repair irregular tire wear. If its bad enough there's any doubt, they should be replaced. Based on the mileage alone it sounds like its time for new shoes.

Same thing happened to me.

My front's were worse than the rears, so I rotated my tires. I drove on them for about another 1,000 miles. I tried to avoid driving in the rain though. Good luck.

I plan on getting my front camber adjusted to the more agressive -2 setting and will get it aligned with slight toe in to compensate for the increased tire wear. I think running slightly higher tire pressures will balance some wear to the center of the tires and the outside edges will get used more if you autocross or bring the car to a road course. Rotating every oil change should help quite a bit as well, but that front toe setting is definitely the number 1 reason that the inside edges get eaten up faster. I'm shooting for 15k-20k with a good alignment on the car, we'll see.

I was told REPEATEDLY that it was a camber issue as my toe was almost always 0 front and rear. I had the exact same "problem" ... they're soft tires and wear this way - overinflation on negative camber to offset aggressive turning (ramps) didn't really help because I had a lot of highway miles.

Anyway, what I did at one point was have the tires dismounted from the wheels and remounted to put the wear on the OUTSIDE of the wheel edge - got me a few more miles before I had to put my allseasons on anyway due to our lovely climate in Illinois ...

Good luck!

BTW, I'll be getting a less wear-prone tire for summers as I've noticed that my allseasons (ContiExtremes) do NOT have the same wear problem as the Advans even w/MORE miles on them!
