strange sound when braking

I get this weird groaning sound coming from my rear brakes when I brake moderately hard. I'm running a bit low on pads, but it still has a bit of life in them. Can this sound be because I'm low on brake fluid or something? I'm gonna replace the pads next week anyway, I just wanted to know where the sound would be coming from. TIA.

Are these the stock brake pads and rotors?

I did experience some mild chunking off of pad material near the end of the pad life. I got a louder than normal groaning sound after that. But since I have had my evo the brakes will groan under a session of strong braking.
