Question about lowering the evo?

I am looking to lower my evo a little in the near future. I would like to spend as little money as possible, as lowering the car will mostly be for a more aggresive look and not to change the handling. Thing handles pretty darn good already. I would like to just buy lowering springs. Any one done this? I know shorter springs can cause travel and wear issues with stock struts and shocks. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just put on Tanabe GF210 springs and I like it. I got a pretty good deal - $250 installed. Like you, I really did it more for looks than performance, but they perform very well. It rides just fine and the drop wasn't too drastic, but good enough to close the wheel gap (1.5 and 1) They are relatively inexpensive and very good quality. I also put them on because I know several people who have used springs (as opposed to coilovers) for 1,000s of miles without problems. Here are some pics:

The STi in the 1st pic has the same springs:

if your car to handle the way it does now, dont change your springs. if your stuck on springs id suggest ralliart, swift, or ?espriler? gt. if you go with springs you might want to add a rear sway bar.

tons of threads on all the springs. some good, some bad.

I have the Tein H-Tech and love them. They didn't lower the car so much that I can't drive anywhere but give it a great stance. No bounce. I think they give a better ride.

Lots of guys here have the Tein S-techs. Good low drop that looks awesome (aprox 1" in front, 2" in back). Ever since I got mine I couldn’t stop looking at my car. It looked so much better! It is low, and I wouldn’t want to go any lower. But I haven’t had any problems with scraping and whatnot. I have two personal friends with the same springs on there evos and it’s the same song. Everyone loves them.

The springs them selves are cheap $110-90. If you can do the install yourself you can save some money there but you will need to do an alignment anytime you do anything to your suspension ~ $75.

The ride is pretty much like stock as far as smoothness goes. Just keep in mind that the stock ride ant that damn smooth to begin with. I hear the H-techs have a little less drop and stiffer ride.

The Speed Factor in Sterling, VA (about 20 miles west of DC out rt. 7) - they're a sponsor of DCEvoClub. They may have been extra-hooking me up, since I'm a friend, but I'm pretty sure that they quoted someone else here the same thing. Give them a call and tell them Steve "Pure Evo" sent you 703-430-9900 Also, since you're in the area, check out www.dcevoclub.com we try to meet up pretty often, in fact this friday night we're having a billiards meet/shoot-out and you could come and check out the ride. I'll let you drive it around too if you want and you can see how it feels compared to stock. The Speed Factor guys may even be there on Friday night, and I think that ISP (Another sponsor) guys will be there for sure too. They give local members really good deals. PM me if you want more info.

I have Tanabe GF210s as well. I like them, they are not to punishing even with 255/35/18 tires. The car looses a little in terms of initial turn-in response. The car doesn't lean nearly as much now.

I was quoted $400+ for installation at 3 different places. I got a buddy of mine and a six pack and did the job in the garage. Use the spring install how to in the "How-to" section. Make sure either you or your friend has done this sort of thing before, if you do it yourself. Autozone will rent/loan you the spring compressor for $40, which they will credit back to you when you bring it back. Free stuff kicks a$$!

I have TEIN S-Techs. First eight months or so, handling was choice, even with the 2" drop. Car looks extremely agggressive. I'm even able to run 17x9 rims. Only problem with springs is over time, they do soften up noticeably. I, in retrospect, would save the extra cash and get a decent coilover setup instead.

btw, as long as you understand how to use tools, you can do the suspension swap yourself/ with a friend. It really isn't that difficult (or at least I didn't think so).

i have the s-tech and i love themm looks amazing and rides great but if i were to do it over again i would probly go with the hotchkis cause i have also seen those and its more of a even drop less drop and i hear they handle better then the stech... actually i would probly just save for coils if i were to do it again haha also depends on who u go to and know for the alignment i get mine done for like 38$ here

I like my H-techs... I wanted them more for the stance not for the performance. Just my 2 cents.
