Winter (snow&ice) Tire sizing

I'm looking at studless snow and ice tires, and have been advised to get a smaller size tire. I want to use the EVO's factory wheels, and am thinking about a 225/45/17 or 215/50/17 tire size. What do you guys think? ...and what brand if you have a suggestion. This is for fairly heavy snow, and ice conditions.

i want a narrower size too, i'm thinking a 225/45. i'd really like a cheap 16" wheel so i could get some sidewall on there but that's probably not happening
