whats wrong with my brakes

Today I was driving around 90mph and then had to brake pretty hard and everything seemed fine at first because you could feel the pressure more as you step harder.....then all of a sudden it felt like there was no brake feel and it felt like your pads wore out. I dont know how to describe the feeling but it sounded and felt like the pads werent there or fell off and there was metal contacting with metal, kind of like a low deep grinding noise and at the same time the pedal seemed like it was at the very bottom. It kinda freaked me out cause it felt like the brakes werent working so I instantly released the brake pedal and stepped on it again but this time it was working normally. This has happened before a couple of times in my brothers BWM also when I slammed on the brakes pretty hard. I thought there was something wrong with his car but today this same thing happened to my Evo so im not sure what it is. When the brakes act up I never really tried keeping my foot down to stop the car cause it freaks me out thinking the car wont stop in time so thats why I always reapply the brakes again.
