Bald Advans

Are bald Advans better in dry traction(autocross) versus a new Advan. Or do I save the worn Advans just to practice with?

Thanks

Tom

I did the "shaved" 2/32 Advan vs. new comparison this season, expecting the worn tire to be better in dry traction.

Wrong. The new tires, even with treadblock squirm, was stickier by a wide margin.

Does this not seem obvious to anyone else? Granted... tires need to wear in a little bit, and warm up to be optimal,.... but BALD = DUMB

Just because they go bald and look like slicks doesn't make them perform like slicks.

There are tires designed to be shaved, and tires NOT designed to be shaved. Advans are designed to be optimal with more than 50% of their tread, like most. Tires like Toyo RA-1's, Pilot Sport Cups, Hoosier Autocross tires, etc etc work well with 2/32's of tread equally as well.

With pilot sport PS2's actually performed very well towards to the very bitter end. What they lacked in overall stiffness compared to all others Ive had, they made up for in wet traction, sheer grip and totally what seemed like limitless street traction.

I have to agree with Feldguy - in my experience Advans seem to get get more greasy when hot as they wear. My experience with Toyo RA-1s has been the opposit - the more they wear the faster they get. The RA-1s also don't seem to go "off" through repeated heat cycles either - or if they do it's very slight.

Strange, I've had the opposite experience. When fresh and new my advans squirm so much they got very greasy quickly. Of course right before they did get that greasy the grip was awesome.

As an example my dad has been tracking one of those "max performance summer tires". It chunked the hell out of itself last year, but not down to the cords. So we had it shaved down to where it chunked. He reported back better grip and the tires never overheated and chunked again. MOF, the damn things won't wear out. Cost him $30 to get all 4 shaved. Why not? It was cheaper than buying a new set.

Now that they're worn the grip stays consistent after they warm up. They never get that super plow feeling, but they also never achieve that same level of grip when they're in that sweet spot. I think losing that level of grip has to do more with multiple heat cycles then it does tread depth.

Would I think shaving the Advan could be an advantage, sure. Would I ever do it, no. The Advan is too expensive of a tire despite it being track/street worthy. I'd rather pick up a tire that can do both at a lower cost like the Kumho MX. Or pick up a proven track tire like the Toyo.

Lightbulb

We have a fun 1/2 mile track with skid pad. The car rotated easily due to the tires lost their grip. But, it was a practice day. I will use my good set when the times count. Thanks for the input, I thought shaved/bald meant increased contact patch.....
