snow braking problems!
hey everyone
finally got some snow to stick out here in chi-town - my first thoughts going out in my evo was like a school boy's anticipating the first snowball fight afterschool! however, upon braking at a routine stop sign, my brakes wouldn't go! if i stepped on it all the way down (not forcefully) just applying mild typical slow to stop pressure brake pedal would shake and not go down! on a couple stops had to engage the hand brake just to stop to avoid the cars! don't know if these pads are oem or not (bought it used!) but jeez i'm starting to have second thoughts about evo's in winters!

You still on stock Advans?
If so, do a Google search on Darwinism.
It is idiotic to drive in the snow with summer tires. Rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, all wheel drive, you just can't stop.

That just sounds like ABS kicking in. ABS sucks on any loose surface. Locking the tires up will actually pile the snow in front of the tire and stop you a lot quicker. Im not sure why people think an AWD car is going to stop better than any other car in the snow. The only thing AWD helps with is accelerating and to a lesser extent, turning.
And yes, dont drive in the snow with summer tires.

thx for the replies - no i'm not on summer tires - i've been on here enough to know at least that part...i'm kumho all seasons - but the problem is mainly w/ the brakes not the tires...have to admit that i'm new to awd but not abs - abs in my truck don't kick in like the evo's though
There's your answer, you're on all seasons. They call them all seasons because they suck in all seasons.
If your tires are not grabbing the surface, you have a tire problem, not a brake problem. Since your brakes work fine when it is not snowing, it is a tire issue.
Get snow tires or learn to threshold brake in the snow. When the ABS kicks in, breathe off the brake pedal a hair and they should grab.

That comments about all season tires sucking in the snow is not correct. I opted for all season tires so that they lasted longer, had quieter road manners in normal conditions, and didn't suck in dry weather. If you are looking for an effective all season/snow tire check out the Continental Extreme Contact all season tire line. I can romp around in the snow better than the SUVs. When buying all season tires for the snow the key is to check out the tread block and figure out which ones are aimed toward snow and ice alittle more......also on a side note I had a set of all season tires siped....suprisingly this really helped alot too. If you haven;t worn your tires down that much at all you might be able to go in and have it done. Goodluck!
by the way that pedal feel sounds like ABS

Conti's were a decent mix for snow and ice with my Evo.
As everyone else here has said, what you experienced was the ABS system doing it's job. Changing out the brake pads won't change your car's behavior - my guess is that the tires you have on don't grip well on ice or packed snow.

I actually had this same problem last year with my Falken 512 all seasons. In the snow, the ABS would just pulse and pulse and hte car wouldnt stop. The way I solved the problem was I pulled the ABS fuse from the panel under the hood, disabling the ABS. I only did this when I had to drive in the snow, and the car stopped 100 times better and I felt I had much more control during braking. Alot cheaper then changing tires, try it out you should be fine. Just put it back in after the snow is gone.
