KW coilover/Robispec Review

Hello everyone,

This past weekend I flew Robert Fuller in the the Raleigh, NC area to install his rear bushing setup, a 25mm rear sway bar, race alignment and the some what new to the market KW Variant 3's.......all I can say is my car feels incredible.

These coilovers are fantastic with their adjustable bump and rebound seperately...you can't go wrong for the street or the track. Robert specified the spring rates for me (a mix of street with 2-3 track days per year) and its perfect. The ride quality is great, very compliant on the rough NC roads, yet remains very stable and flat when pushed in the twistys. The way the car is setup lets me know that it will do more than I am even capable of doing on the street, and inspires confidence in the driver. After the setup we set the car down on the scale to check the balance and it was so close (within 1%) I opted to for-go the counter weighting. Even better for my wallet.

Looks wise: I went for about 1.5" front drop with a 1.25 " rear drop. The car looks very flat, not raked in the front and still does not rub with my 235/40/18 Azenis 615's. Even with my wheels having a 28 offset.

Robert is a hell of a nice guy and very knowledgable about Evo suspension setup and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to have work done by a true "professional". He is very knowledgable, works hard, and simply turns out a good product. I couldn't be more pleased.

Thanks,
Chris

glad you like the robispec setup.. for the money this KW setup cannot be beat... we are talking double adjustable coilovers for the price of most regular single adjustables.

KW is German correct? Robi, how would you rate them against RRC coilovers like the JICs?

Any cons to them as they are not inverted and maybe a little more weight at the bottom of the front struts with the remote resevoir?

Any installed pics?

I still am in love, very impressed with these coilovers. I did take photos but they need to be resized and then I will post them. Thanks for the replies to the post.

Not that you would notice.still lighter than stock as a comlpete system and almost the same unsprung weight with your average wheel options

Rob, When can I get you to do an alignment? I am getting a little tired of steering with the rear wheels. Give me a call.

Chris,

Thank you very much for the writeup! I have been wondering where these coilovers would fit in with the others.

My problem is I cannot pull the trigger to purchase a set of DMS 50's because the money factor. Obviously, I want the best setup possible on my Evo, but the DMS seem to be out of my price range.

From what I've seen, I think the next best choice is the KW Variant 3's.

Robi, with DMS 50's being too much for me...... in your opinion...what would be the next best setup? Would you consider these KW's, would you do DMS 40's, Ohlins?
Basically, Robi, what would you recommend to be comparable to the DMS 50's.....for a tad bit less?

Thanks in advance

Nothing in my experiance (ymmv) compares to the 50's both in ride quality on the street or grip at the track (two VERY different bump vs rebound settings) even at their pricepoint....many have said that the more expensive options (everyone knows their names) are as good or faster at the track....to date hard cold facts which prove these assertions are hard to come by. The KW's are the shock which Ralliart specifies for it's base customer car, and is the spec shock for Group B rally in Europe. This must have a good effect. Fantastic build quality and very consistant shock to shock has been my experiance with the Varient 3's (but the same goes for the DMS's too). I have yet to A-B 40's against the KW's but single vs double ajustability ASSUMING all else is = is desirable....as long as you have the time/desire to find your "sweet Spot" (or pay someone else to tune them for you ...blatent promotional pitch lol).

I don't quite understand what you mean by this statement, Robert.

Please clarify.

What are the spring rates for these? I have ridden in 7kg/mm F, 5kg/mm R and it's damn harsh in Chicago roads.
