RS fitted with ABS?

I have an 06 RS.

It has the ACD, so it must have wheel speed sensors of some type.

Could ABS be retro-fitted to the RS with out major changes?

Thanks

I am sure that the wheel sensors that we have work for both acd and (if equipped) ABS. Not sure what all you would need, but at very least you would have to replumb brake lines, need an abs computer, the pump itself, etc.

The real question would be: why?

Stopping distance is why.

ABS systems generally out stop non ABS systems. ABS sytems can stop one wheel from locking up, can't do that with the brake pedal unless you let off all four.

The upside of no ABS is a lighter simpler car.

The Brembos are great brakes.

F1 cars use traction and brake controls unless they are not alowed by the rules, and some likely cheat.

Most likely not worth the effort, but I was thinking it might be good not to lock it up and hit the back of a buick.

12 years of ABS make you reluctant to give it up, one of the potential down falls of the RS I have.

Thanks

I would say major changes would be needed. You should have gotten a TR WRX maybe.

TR WRX ftl! Did someone suggest that on an evo forum?

Much better off with the rs, i can understand your addiction to abs, i just dont share it. Never had it, and not worried about it.

I do a lot of track driving and have never come across an instance where i wish i had it. It requires a little more skill, but well worth it imo.

I can see its benefit on the street tho.

I worried about the lack of ABS on my RS at first but it's a great tool to teach yourself threshold braking (and lockup recovery). It's good practice for the eventual switch to Formula cars.

Answer: Rain, snow, ice, gravel, hard braking in a corner...what kind of question is that???

It's like asking why you would want insurance.

w or wo ABS

+1

I have road raced a car without ABS and it is great to be able to learn proper threshold braking, however, in the real world of everyday driving, I love ABS and will gladly take the weight (and cost) penalty associated with it. Just my two-cents.

Thanks for the replys, I think you guys expressed my thoughts and answered my questions pretty well.

I have seen photos of a engine bay with ABS.

Large block right behind the intake, with losts of lines running to it and the heat shield / noise insulation right behind it, I don't have that either.

I wish I was going to go to a F1 car, mostly wishful thinking.

I would likely need to reprogram the ECU also.

Some of the older ABS systems can go nuts on the track (LS1 Camaros are an example of this).

I have had ABS fail also, scary when parking, like hitting grease. Never would have thought it could fail and come on for no reason, bad wheel sensor. Major pucker factor (not on an EVO).

I think I will leave it alone.

Thanks for the input.

the old ABS systems suck! (if you're going back 12 years)
but yeah, the new systems are usually setup very well.

I was worried about it at first as well - had an '03 GSR. A couple of minutes at the track - it's forgotten

I would never give up my RS for an MR or GSR
