autox rubber

Ive picked up an extra set of stock wheels for next year, and Im trying to find the right set of rubber. Im thinking of using either the kumho v710, or hoosier A6. Beyond that, I cant decide of sizing both come with either 245/40/17 or 275/40/17. I think that the 275's are probably too much tire for the stock wheels, but does anyone have experience and or opinions on these tires for stock wheels? thanks

255 is about the biggest you can go with the stock 17x8's.

245/45-17 V710s should do well if you have a proper suspension. I wouldn't do 275 V710s on stock-sized rims, but 275s _are_ doable if done properly.

Yep, 255/40/17 is about the max for stockers.

Are you looking for slicks or a good street tire? Have you heard about the Falken RT615s?

I have the rt615's and love them, great for the street and not bad for the track but they go off after about 5 to 7 laps depending on how hard you're beating on them. It sounds like he bought the extra set to be track dedicated though, so why not get a really soft compound.

Wont slicks (r-comps) change your car class? I.e. from TSM to STU/STX.

Many things can change the class, and he hasn't specified any class restrictions. If he wants to be fast, he'll get the V710s (or A6s), but if he wanted that extra set of rims just for a daily driving tire that can do ok for racing, then the RT-615 is a good choice. I use the RT-615 for daily driving and rag racing, but the 285 V710s for autox/circuit.

What is this rag racing you speak of, is it a new type of racing?

and these are slicks that I want to use just for racing. Im happy with the tires on my car right now (ecsta 711's) for everyday use, they just didnt do too great on the autox course. as far as classing, you can run slicks in the stock class, though Im running in BSP (which I am waaay under-modded for). If money were no option, then of course Id have a nice set of ccw 18x10 with like, 315s. unfortunately Im broke, so I gots to what I gots to do.

Please do a search, 275/40/17 is the tire choice on a 17x8 wheel in A-Stock. Yes it fits and yes it rubs slightly on the inner plastic liner. I recall the v710's being a tiny bit smaller than the A6's. Besides the top STI's running 275's, there are also a few members like JWTodd who have run both the 245 and 275. Johnathon Roberts in his A-Stock STI ran 275's and won the 2006 Pro Solo Finale, the Pro Solo Championship, and took 4th at the Solo2 National Championship in a very competitive 50+ car field.

275 is a lot of tire for the stock wheels. Don't think I've seen that before. 275 on 8 inch rims?

I was under the assumption A-stock required stock rim width as well as stock tire width....

no, it just requires wheels that are the same width, diameter, and within .25" +/- offset. any tire you wish can be used.
