The smoothest coilover???

Hey guys,

I had my evo a bit over a year now. I love it and all, and I know that performance car is a performance car, but it really kills me the stiffnes of the car. I live in Ohio, in Parma and roads are crap here, bump after bump. When I bought the car it had Tein S tech's on it, I could bear the stiffnes, but the road here has a lot of bumps and some you can't really miss. Seeking to make it a little softer I bought stock springs, but it didn't help much. Right now I think my shocks are bad too, knocks like hell.
Also I decided to take my evo to the track this year too, so I'm looking for a coilover system. I heard there some that can make your car really smooth on the road, way smoother than stock, so I'm just wondering which coilover is great for street use and would be useful on the track too. Street is my main concern, cause I drive evo everyday.

Thanks

P.S Hope it didn't sound like I'm looking for BMW or Mercedes - I Love my evo

You sound like me. I've been looking into the Bilstein PSS9's and the KW Variant 3's. Apparently both kits can be softened up for the street but still be tuned for the track. You have to pay to play though. Parts alone will be $1600-$2000

Aren't they adjustable???? I know some come with those modes, like 1-8 (track), 9-16(mountain driving) 17-32 (street)??? I was thinking about something like that, but was looking to get opinions first.

I Subscribe to Super Street and Tein had just released one (forgot the name), but they specifcally say that it's very, very smooth.

If you've got the money then might I suggest some custom Ohlins.

I'm still doing the research myself. I have been for about 6 months now. Ohlins are out for me. I'm not doing $3k for coilovers until I'm a regular weekend track warrior. I've also been told to steer clear of any JDM setups because of how high the spring rates typically are. Check out these threads. They have some good info...

Ok, sounds like PSS9 would be really nice. But you have to get coilovers tuned?? Can't you adjust the on your own??? Sorry, I'm really dumb when it gets to suspension

Also price matters to me. Even if I can get a little improvement over stock shocks/springs that would be nice. Maybe springs could do better??? I heard from everyone that Tein S tech are crap, so I wondering also - what other springs are great and offer me than stock suspension?

Everyone will of course recommend what they have on here so I'm not sure how useful this will be for you. I have the HKS Hipermax RS coilovers in my car. They are 30 way adjustable and can be made to ride softer than stock even with the car dumped. I also have a set of Megan Track coilovers (32 way adjustable) and they are okay for the street but because of the spring rates they are stiffer than my Hipermax RS's. A friend of mine has the Bilstein PSS9's in his car and they ride really well too.

As far as the statement about staying away from JDM coilovers, that is a blanket statement that has no validity. As with anything you need to determine what the priority is for you. Getting Ohlins or Motons to drive in traffic and commute makes no sense. Most of the Japanese coilover makers offer something for almost everyone. Look at the spring rates, first and if possible try to go to a meet and get a ride in as many cars with different set ups as you can. Keep in mind spring rates and valving will make the biggest difference in how the car rides or performs more so than the manufacturer.

you should look into the mr bilsteins they are a lot smoother than the stock and handle the bumps and dips better. Also if you use it daily you will be a lot happier.

They're not a lot smoother, but they are more compliant. It's not an enormous difference in ride quality.

I was in the same boat a couple weeks ago. I was choosing between Megan Racing Street COs (cheap) or KW Variant 3s (expensive) for Robi to install on the car when he comes down here later this week. I test rode the Megans and they were a definite improvement over the stock suspension and a definite increase in handling; especially coupled with the Robispec setup. I came away highly impressed and am having them installed Thursday. Robi tells me that the KWs will give a much better ride than stock. I live in Miami Beach and the roads here really suck.

Why would you want coilover if your car going to spend the majority of the time on the street. Coilover is not going to give you a smoother ride. Your stock shocks were probaly worn out by the Tein lowered spring. Therefore, putting back a set of stock spring on a worn out shocks is not going to help. Just get a nice set of Bilstein and run it with stock spring.

I would think that ANY coilover system offered for the evo is harsher then the stock suspension. IMO you would be better off going with MR bilstein take-offs
