break pad install with or without shims?

I have a new set of performance friction pads front and rear with new stoptech slotted rotors I am throwing on tonight..

Question is on my last evo, I replace the rear pads once with ebc green stuff pads... then there was a anoying high pitched squeel that was going on until I was told to order a set of shims from mitsu. I did that and no more squeel.

Now the performance friction pads seem to have a aluminum shim on the front pads however not on the rear pads... I baought a set of shims front and rear.. should I put all them on ar are they not needed?

Thanks in advace for all your help guys!!!!

Put them on, you will regret not doing it. Also, get some disk brake quiet stuff from NAPA or Autozone and apply it to the back of the shim and to the edges of the backing plate.

If you put on the pads without shims you will get annoying squealing. (brake noise)

Is this an advanced topic?

For the street use the shims with anti-squeal.

I have the EBC green stuff pads on my evo. They made the worst screeching noise when i put them on. I even took them back apart and put on the stop squeek stuff from auto zoo. didn't work.

Then after i got fustrated and just mashed the brakes real hard from somwhere like 80-90ish (not recomended) and got rid of the "Break-In" coating on the pads. The squeek was gone. Havn't had a problem with them ever since. BTW no shims, unless your talking about the spingy clip that goes on top of the pads I reused them.

Head to your local auto parts store and buy a small bottle of Anti-Sieze. Apply a thin even layer on the back of both your brake pads and on the contact points on the sides of the brake pad and slap them in and you'll be fine. I use to be a technician at a dealership and this technique worked fairly well and didn't have any comebacks for squealing noises.

yes i have the same pads and i used the shims. i'm not sure why they told you NOT to use them. my friend is one of the engineers there and he said to use them.

i've noticed that if you swap to a much better pad then stock ie hawk hps or equivalent, you will experience brake noise regardless of shim or no shim as long as you are using the stock rotors. Once i swapped rotors... all the noises are gone and the brakes are wonderful

I just want to offer an update, use the shims that come with the pads from PFC. Do not use the stock shim AND the shim provided by PFC, you’ll get uneven wear. I had bad brake squeal with both shims and I removed the stock shims and left in the PFC shims and what a difference.

Hope it helps.

Hard breaking will also work to stop the squeal. I suffered through a lot of it when I replaced stock pads with Hawk HPS, then jammed the breaks at ~60mph to a hard stop, worked like a charm
(BTW - I did have the shims installed....)
