Q's about RT-615
Hi guyz,
I am thinking about getting these tires once my stock advans are gone and would like to know the following;
1) I know that 255-40-17 is evom's choice of size, but does anyone have experience with 235-40-17's instead? And how do you like them?
2) How many HPDE's should I be able to get out of these RT-615's? How do they wear out in comparison to stockers? Better or worse?
Thanks

1) Haven't seen anyone use the 235/40. That's smaller than stock and would have no benefit. Do you have a reason for wanting to use them, or are you just curious of feedback from anyone who has used them?
2a) No way to answer that. It depends on how much track time you get, the type of track, the way you drive, etc.
2b) They handle comparably to the stock Advans but do get greasy after 4-5 laps or so (again, depending on the track and driving). They generally last a little longer than the stock Advans, too.
Here's an in-car vid of me on my RT-615s doing HPDE3 with NASA. I was used to driving on my r-comps, but I was trying to go back to street tires to get some more training, which is why you'll notice me pushing at times due to coming in too hot.

Warrtalon,
Enjoyed watching the video. RT-615's seem to have good handling characteristics from the video of yours.
Back to the topic now, when you say smaller, do you mean shorter sidewalls? If any, what would be the downside to running 40-profile tires instead of stock 45's?
I am little reluctant to go with 255's, because it might bulge little too much on stock 8" width rims.
Also, I have used about 50% thread on stockers during 3 HPDE's in novice groups. I plan to do more HPDE's this yr, hence being curious about the wear of falken's.
If anyone has experience with 235-40-17's, please chime in for some comments.
Thanks

235/40/17 are relatively new so I doubt many have had a chance to try that size out. I can tell you that your speedo will be slightly off and will read higher than you are actually going. I have personally used the 245/45/17 size RT-615s and I like them more than the stock tire. It has very good breakaway characteristics and will wear out very similar to stockers ... again wear depends on your driving style and how aggressive you are ...
I think the 255's are too squishy; i don't like them, and have no idea why everyone sings them so much praise. Added body roll over stock as well.
I can't corner half as aggresively as i did on my stock Advans, and i'm much less confident; not to mention how easily i break traction when launching these as well.
It's always been amazing to me how you can find such mixed reviews on the same product on such similar cars; maybe i just got a bad set or something
. Regardless, Warr and i'm sure most others have more track experience than I, so you might be better off listening to them.
All i know is my next set of tires are going to be Nitto NT01's, i'm done messing around. I will DD them and everything, i know a few people who have and say it's well worth it for the performance.

Thanks for the comments, guyz. I guess that I will be the one of the first few to try 235/40/17s. Good to hear that some of you guys had good luck with 245/45/17. I have my first event at the end of this month and then, I will be going to a 6 day road-racing trip to Watkins Glen next month. I will try to write a mini review on 235/40/17 RT-615's after that. Hopefully, these tires will perform similar to stockers, because I really liked how stockers held up on the track. We will see.....
There is no bulging with the 255s, so if that's your only reason for getting a smaller tire than stock, then you should get the bigger 255s, imo. I have a bunch of different pics showing me stationary and racing with the 255s on the stock rims, and there's no bulging.
