Toyo RA-1s outlast any Kumho by 10 times? I think this statement is a little absurd and shows your bias torwards the products you sell. Which is fine, you gotta sell your products.

If I'm reading the original post correctly, we are talking about "street" tires. I don't consider a 40 treadwear Toyo RA-1 a "street" tire. Sure it's DOT approved, but I think most people will NOT be daily driving RA-1s.

As for my review of the Kumho MX. I have been running a set (245/40/17) for the last 3k miles which includes a trackday at Thunderhill. As most people will agree, this tire is not as sticky as the A-046. *BUT* this tire is also $80 cheaper PER tire. I am willing to sacrifice a *little* bit of performance for a $250 savings over the A-046. $250 isn't exactly pocket change right?

This tire is an excellent bang for the buck. I can speak to it's dry weather and wet weather performance. At my T-hill trackday, half the day was dry, 2nd half was wet. Raining pretty hard actually. In the dry the tires worked great and from what I can tell are only slightly less grippy than the A-046. In the wet, they performed better than the A-046. I was actually surprised at the grip in the rain so I had plenty of confidence on track. On the street, the MX are slightly quieter than the A-046. My stock Yokos lasted me about 10.5k miles. That includes about 5 or 6 autocrosses and 2 trackdays at T-hill. I'm not sure how long the MX will last, but after one track day and about 3k of street driving, tread life still looks about 80%.

Anyways...Speaking from a real street tire perspective...Bottom line is A-046 is definitely a better dry tire. Can't beat it. If money is somewhat of a factor to you, then try the Kumho MX. I did and I don't regret it one bit. After trying these tires, I would recommend them to anyone who wants the best bang for the buck tire. I personally cannot justify the extra $250 for the A-046.

Now if you wanna talk about DOT R-compounds like the Kumho V700s or the Toyo RA-1s, I think that probably belongs in a different thread. ;-)

Why?? Shouldnt be that these autoxers are cheap... I believe
Hoosiers cost more than Toyos...

But I think the Toyo is the all around best track/autocross tire for thoese who dont' want to buy tires all time and not have the tires as an excuse for not going fast. Plus you get the bonus of being able to drive on the stree with them too.

We're comparing apples to oranges.

Kumho MX are street tyres. RA1s are road-course DOT race tyres, V700s are pretty much autocross-specific DOT race tyres, much softer than RA1s and have a reputation for becoming very greasy on a road course; AS03 Hoosiers are autocross-specific DOT race tyres, RS03 Hoosiers are road-course-specific DOT race tyres. The only difference between AS03s and RS03s is the compound.

MXs should not be mentioned in the same conversation as the others above, they are closer (though not at all equal) to Falken Azenis. Falken Azenis are a notch or two behind Kumho V700s.

yes but azinies are the damned scariest thing ever in heavy rain or when they wear.

although I would say they seem better in the dry than any tire i have been on before.

7000 miles on my MX's now....no track events, slightly less grip than stock yoko's...but the wear, or lack of it, on these things is incredible...I would highly recommend these tires for road use..my 2c

The Kumo MX tire was thought to be the tire of choice in the subie autox crowd for running STX.

However, the results were not that great. This tire has a very soft sidewall compared to the advans or Falkin Azenis.

If given a choice I choose the Azenis over the MX for the best bang for the buck. From what I have been told, the wet weather performance is similar for both tires.

I posted earlier in this thread about going to Discount tire after I had called and they ended up not having the tire they said they did when I arrived. Since I was down to thread on one of the Advans, I let them mount ES-100's instead which turned out to ba a horrible choice for the Evo. I had them order the MX's in 245/40-17, and they gave me a call today saying that they were in si I went by and had the ES-100's taken off and the MX's mounted. There is quite simply a night and day difference. I only have about 40 miles on the MX's so far, but from what I can tell already they are exellent tires. The squishy sidewall feel that the ES-100's had is gone and the grip seems to be pretty good although I am just getting the mold release compound burned off. They may not have the ultimate dry grip of the Advans, but they should last longer than 9300 miles and so far I am very happy, on the other side of the coin I had only driven a little over 4 miles with the ES-100's when I knew that they would not work. I would highly recommend the MX's and I am happy that I had Discount Tire order them in.

Yup... I was very surprised too... Though the sidewall on MX is
only 1-ply... they dont seem to roll over as much... The Falken
Azenis went as far as 3-ply for ultimate roll resistance (reason
why they are so heavy)....

I have the MX's about 3K miles on them. The grip isn't bad BUT the sidewall is REALLY soft. You need to inflate them a lot, like 42psi cold and 39psi cold. If you don't they'll roll over, and all the extra pressure wears the middle of the tire drastically.

I'm looking for a tire for daily driving and a road course event. A few people told me the MXs would not hold up at all in their present condition, perhaps not even making through the day. So I'm looking for a good daily driver tire that will last a road course event without problems.

You could try Toyo T1S tires. Great all around street tire. These were used in SCCA speed series up until this year. Not real race tires, but a good compromise.
