rear strut issue...

well this may not look so great being as it's my first post. been a long time reader and just finally registered when i got my car not too long ago. i usually use this site for the wealth of information but i couldn't find anything about this so here goes:

well i went to go swap my mr bilstiens with tein springs onto the car this evening at work and everthing was simple and went right in. until i went to test drive it. it handled like **** and pretty quickly i realized it felt like the rear struts were blown out. swing it back to the shop and find the actual piston shaft of the strut and the very upper most piece of the strut top about 4-5" higher than usual completely separated from the strut top. this left the strut completely useless and riding on just springs in the rear. the thing that boggles my mind is how the rear strut top could have just come apart. my only thought would be in the top part of the piston shaft working its way through the strut top but there doesnt appear to be any damage anywhere. what the hell?

thanks in advance for any help anybody can give me with this cuz well, right now, my car is immoble for two days

here's a quick phone pic i got of it

only thing i can think of is if i tightened too much on that top nut enough that it started to pull the shaft of the strut up through the strut top?
