Trying to install rear swaybar...help please

I'll start off my saying that I've done DSM swaybars in the past with no problems, and my friend helping me has also done DSM's plus his Evo VIII. We tried installing my new bar on my IX tonight and he said the end-links are different from his and don't have the same little nut his do to hold the bolt while unscrewing the big nut holding the swaybar to the end-link. We pulled the rubber boot back slightly and it looked perfectly round with nothing to grip on to. The bolt has what looks like a hex head in it, but we couldn't find a size to fit snuggly. Have you guys seen this before? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!

when i did mine, i just relied on the stiffness of that joint to allow me to loosen/tighten it. if i remember correctly, the manual only calls for it to be torqued to around 20ft/lb. so you should be able to get it off and on once. i ended up having to buy perrin endlinks though, because eventually that ball joint there got loose from me using it alot to adjust the stifness of my bar.

although i thought there were two flat spots under the boot that could get a wrench on.

Is the hex head thing you're talking about for an allen wrench? If so, go buy a set of metric allen wrenches.

We tried that, the 4 is too small and the 5 is too big. Thanks though

I soaked the nuts with PB Blaster last night and we're going to give it a try again this evening to see if that helped any.

The rear also started making a clunking noise now so maybe we got one of them slightly loose last night before the bolt just started spinning with the nut?

Which sway bar did you purchase? The clunking could be from the mounts if there not the Perrin Stout Mounts. If the sway bar is not a Perrin, you can still purchase the Stout Mounts seperately, and you might want to purchase the End Links as well. I purchased the complete Perrin SB that comes with the mounts and the end links. Installation was very easy, with lots of adjustability.

I bought the Whiteline bar which just reuses the stock mounts. The stock bar is still on the car though.

Just use 2 open ended wrenches, 1 on each side of the bar, use the 1st one to hold while you turn the 2nd one, its really pretty easy to do.

As he said the back-side is missing the hex "nut", like seen on dsm end-links and I guess other evos.

yeah that clunking is most likely one of them being loose. i remember one time when my stock endlinks were on their way out, both of them were loose, i pulled over a speed bump and thought the rear end of the car was coming apart.

The Whiteline bar is installed. We found a Torx bit that fit and called upon our friends vice grip and sledge hammer! Don't worry, we only used to hammer to gently tap stuff I will say though, what a royal PITA that was, never has a swaybar given me so much trouble in my life. Once everything was installed the bar fit perfectly and makes zero noise going over bumps.

I was the helping hand, and DAMN what a ***** this was! I put in my progress bar in my VIII myself in about an hour and a half, quite easy. This took almost 3 hours taking so much time to remove the stock bar from the endlinks, tweak it out and then we had a pretty insane time trying to get the whiteline bar in. I think it hugs the chassis a bit more than the progress bar I have, because it was *really* tight going in.

Thanks again for your help! The Whiteline bar definitely could not be much closer to the under carriage! Its obviously well built though b/c it does not rub or make any noise at all.
