Well "better" is very subjective. Some would argue that a 235 suits the 8" wheel better, even if the 255/40 have been proven to "work" fine on an 8". Most people just want the most rubber under their car as possible while maintining the same diameter as stock. Combined with the availability and selection of tires in this size, this makes it a popular choice.

If you want to get some tires to run in some Auto X classes like stock or STU, 255s are beyond the tire limitations of those classes. Some of the guys who are into Auto X and wan to stay within the class spec. will deal with it if it's the only size available for the tire they want, and/or don't mind the slightly taller overall diameter as it helps them get a little bit more out of their gearing, even if it means their speedometer being a little bit off (depending on what transmission they have).

If you're not getting stock size replacements then get the 255/40/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s and let this thread rest. This has been discussed over and over.

This is great, I was told by the Mitsu dealer that I had to stay with the stock size or it would mess up the AWD system. If I am reading this correctly, they are full of poop.
