Staggered wheels on Evo

Hi I've seen some wheels I really like but the only problem is they are a staggered fitment. 18x8 + 35 & 18x9 +35.

Can I run these on an 03 Evo? I've heard that 4wd cars don't like staggered wheels. Can I correct this by selecting the right size tire?

I've tried searching but some threads says yes its fine and other no it causes problems.

Which is it?

As long as you keep the tire diameters the same all around the awd should be fine. Many of the 9" wheels we carry might require a fender lip roll so I'd make sure all is going to clear or else you'll need to create clearance.

What about when you rotate your tires? I would not recommend staggered on an evo if it's just a daily driver.

Awesome thanks! What is the smallest (narrowest and lowest profile) tire I could fit on these rims? Please mention sizes per axle.

I appreciate that you can't rotate them.... well in theory you could but it would look stupid.

there are enough wheels out that fit the evo correctly, why would you do this?

if anything you would put the wider wheels on the front for better traction / turn in. many who do track days put spacers on just the front.

if you put the wide ones on the back to look like a RWD car then you're a ricer and deserve to get laughed at.

Just put the 18x9's on the front and back.

there are literally 20+ sets of commonly used 18x9 wheels on this site alone

let alone the options that people don't usually run

Yes I know 18X9 are a popular size for the Evo but I've been searching for a particular wheel and it's not easy to find. This is the only reason I've gone for a staggered setup.

Those brands of wheels that you listed above are pretty common IMO. I wanted something different / rare

Sounds like you found some used JDM wheels off a RWD car for a good deal. I and many others have debated the option as well, and IMO it's just not worth the hassle if you drive the car on the street. Staggered offsets are one thing, can have their own benefits if done properly, but staggered widths is a PITA regarding tires. If you are determined to do it just to get those wheels, then I guess you are going to anyway. You just have to know that you will be limited to carefully buying certain tires to maintain the same overall diameter, and when the fronts begin to wear out faster like they always do, you won't be able to rotate wheels OR tires, and will have to buy completely new ones or risk putting stress/wear and tear on your transfer case because of the difference in overall diameter.

You're right I did buy used JDM wheels. I know it's a pain in the *** because you can't rotate the tires and you have to match the so they are the same overall diameter but sod it I think they will look awesome.

I just need some help with my tire sizes. I want to go as skinny and as low as I can but maintain the overall diameter. Help please!

Oh and here is a pic of what I'm buying. They may be JDM's but they are German!

I'm also trying to weigh up what tires. I was thinking Toyo Proxes T1R's as I love them... they're an awesome tire!

What lug nuts too... rays or Kics R40's? Decisions, decisions .

EDIT: I just realized you posted the specs above. Are they three piece?

If so, you may want to consider another option. It sounds undesireable, but to save yourself hassles down the road, it could be worth it.

If they are three piece wheels, you could potentially get new hoops for either half of each 8" wheel, or worst case scenario both hoops for the 8", to end up with those wheels in 9" all around, the size that would have been best to begin with

It would cost a bit, but there's nothing like custom BBS that fit properly, and in that offset, it would give you MAXIMUM tire size options, instead of the MINIMUM options, which is your current situation. Faving the money to buy few pairs of staggered tires, and the work would pay for itself.

Just a thought. Because I like stuff like that...

they're bbs lm2. great wheels, but they bend pretty easily since they're really designed for track use. the upside is they're light and rebuildable.

you could spend a little more and get 2 of them re-barreled to be the same all around since they multi piece wheels.

They are BBS LM's

BBS LM - "BBS Gold" 2-Piece Die Forged Aluminum Wheel - Weight optimized by FEM analysis.

Sizes are 18x8 + 35 & 18x9 +35.

I was thinking of running staggered then looking out for a set with a pair of 18X9 +35's. I could then run 18x9 +35 all round. Try finding them though!

I'm also considering having the rims powdercoated gunmetal, buying Schmidt Radinox lips and redoing them.
Check out these bad boy lips! Click here and go to Radinox tests. Amazing!
