I was told by the local les schwab that changing just one tire on an awd would damage the TC in the long run.....is this true or just some cheap trick to sell more tires.???

 

This, unfortunately, is true. If the other three tires are within 2/32 tread depth of the new tire (has to be the exact same tire), you're ok. Outside of that, you'll wear out the differentials. Minimum $5000 repair bill.

Its funny how many people think this is a trick. Fact of the matter is the rotational difference the differential will have to make up for the mis match of tire sized will eventually kill it. This has been know way back when subarus were tearing there drivetrain out because they would only stick tires on the front.

 

Yes, this is the harsh reality of high performance cars. Little things like this can damage major components ending up in a huge bill. I say, always have a back up set of tires. Thats what I do
